B87 And Atlanta has a 12C mean max in January. But you see this in parts of Greece, milder than here but snowier as the prevailing synoptics allow northerlies to plunge straight into the region from time to time, mixed with extremely mild spells at other times when the temp reaches or even exceeds 15C. There is no strong jet and little zonality that is the real killer of wintry setups in NW Europe.

Metwatch Given the air in the south is still fairly mild why is the air dry incidentally?

The general pattern is that in winter (except in late winter anticyclonic setups), mild air = damp / high DP. I'd expect the colder air moving in tomorrow to be dry but not the relatively mild air over the south currently. Yet here it felt dry too, surfaces becoming dry by the afternoon.

Airmass following this morning's front associated with the storm is still a fair bit cooler, very dry air back end of this low as it's so intense.

Summer8906 the wind wicked away all the moisture 😉

In my area it says 68% humidity. Is that dry? I don't really know the benchmark of "dry" weather for SE England in winter. 68% humidity seems pretty moist on paper

LetItSnow If it happens again, a 3rd late SSW event to once again ruin Spring, then we can just confirm it being a new normal and that Spring is now the missing season. Anyone cheering on another late season SSW basically LOVES dull, monotonic, wet, mild and nothingness weather that weve basically had for the majority of the past few years. Go shove that SSW where the sun dont shine. NOT AGAIN.

cheese you live in the north east though, the sunniest location in the UK, it’s us in the south east who the weather gods hate.

Very windy obviously yesterday with virtually no movements at the airport until late pm. I would’ve thought the last spots of snow would’ve been blown away but no the odd small pile remains in situ.  If any last until tomorrow that’ll be 3 weeks!

RJBingham Hopefully it stays that way. Spring was my favourite season due to having Summer yet to come, the lengthening days, lots of wonderful sunny & pleasant weather but lately, due to all this SSW rubbish, its been basically a cooler version of Autumn full of grey muck, rain & nothingness. Let's hope we do avoid one this year and get to enjoy an actual Spring again 🤞

Had been thinking that having some kind of Stratospheric warming event that could lead to a cold and snowy spell before Winter shuts its doors, yet somehow still achieving a desirable drier, sunnier, Spring, but with warmer daytimes temperatures for March and April than the last two, would be heaven. Now am thinking that perhaps that’s not a risk worth taking. No guarantees of a proper warming event (like the SSW), plus colder spells are still possible without them.

The last 2 Springs were very underwhelming with the settled and bright weather (except I found April 2023 was passable and May 2023 had some fairly good sunnier periods. May 2024 was also okay in parts). As such, having another Spring be un-Spring-like would feel dismaying. So I think not having another late(ish) Stratospheric Warming event/SSW would feel like a safer bet.

Wasn’t also looking forward to the Atlantic going on a rampage this week, but have to confess that it has been delivering some decent sunnier periods. Especially since yesterday and so far today. Unfortunate it will have been for some dealing with issues that Eowyn has left behind.

Feeling pretty burnt out and fatigued from the last few days, particularly from the storm Eowyn stuff - and I’m not really that keen on storms. Well, most times. (And the fact this site, while great, becomes addictive, allowing it to interfere with other things😅🙈). Going to try have a break from it from tomorrow.

Hopefully February can offer something for many, not just another wet Westerly dominated month, (except for the mild part), particularly a focus on something more settled. A focus that then leads to a more promising Spring. (For me again, being one that offered some great periods of mild, warm, dry and sunny weather, a few odd thunderstorms and the odd wintry blast or two).

To be fair, you can’t say that spring is now missing just because two poor ones happened. The springs of 2022 and 2020 aren’t that long ago, plus it’s the only season that has a noticeable trend of getting drier (and it’s getting sunnier on average too). We were just unlucky in 2023 and 2024.

For spring 2025 I would expect a much better one, though there also is an outside chance of it being a cold one due to it being a bit overdue. But even if it was, there’s no guarantee that would mean it would be worse than the last two. Look at April 2021 for example.

Weather changes and when the next couple of dry years happens the threads about worryingly dry will open and people will claim it’s the new normal and that we’ll never see a wet year again. 😂 Happens every time.

And to prove I have no agenda I’m expecting a better spring/summer this year I think.

Where has this SSW ruins spring nonsense come from? January 2019 had one and we had that glorious February and a good March.

We may have had a couple of relatively poor Springs, but one of them (2024) broke the record by 0.25C. We were just unlucky with the synoptics. Not forgetting 2022, 2021, 2020 and 2019, 2017, 2016 and 2015 were all sunnier than average for the majority (6 out of the previous 7 Springs!).

LetItSnow Yes and we rarely go very long without having a notably dry April. It’s been 3 years now so I wouldn’t be surprised if we had a dry one this year.

TheOgre April has been remarkable for being dry of late. The Aprils of 2020, 2021 and 2022 had a combined total of 13.0mm of rain here. 2007, 2009, 2011, 2013 and 2015 all had under 20mm each.

reef Agreed, drawing conclusions from two cases is absurd.

Saying Spring is ruined because of a late-season SSW is as wrong as saying an SSW mid-Winter guarantees cold weather.

Nice sunset after a mostly sunny and calm day.

Another washout from tomorrow afternoon sadly, but signs of high pressure building in by next weekend.

reef I think I’m guilty of being paranoid about it myself. Seemingly getting sucked in about the relationship between SSW’s and Springs (even when acknowledging in my mind that not all SSW’s lead to rotten Springs). But would be willing to bet there has been years where some settled, dry, warm, Springs, were followed by some SSW’s. Bit mentally fatigued to think of any currently, (partially contributing wanting to have a break to recharge). But suspect there’s likely been a few in the last 20 years or so.

Either way, Spring 2025 better ensure it consumes all of Autumn for breakfast and not leave any traces of it behind on the plate (like it did with the last two!). I mean, like LetItSnow, I would be pretty staggered if this year’s Spring wasn’t an improvement.

PS:  Metwatch An awesome capture of sky. Pretty assortment of blue, grey and pinky hues.
