Yes this illustrates what I was saying well.🙂

To put that 231mph Mount Washington wind gust record into another sort of perspective with a random example, the force difference from say just a 4mph increase from 227mph to 231mph is around 4.1 psf (pounds per square foot)..that is roughly equivalent to the force that a 40mph wind exerts!

Highest gust recorded was from Cyclone Olivia in Australia, gust of 254mph!

 Summer8906

As @TwisterGirl81 mentioned, trees where in leaf in 1987 as opposed to the 1990 storm and this makes a big difference to the impacts to them, wind direction was generally southerly veering southwest in the south/southeast of England during peak winds so not quite the usual direction for very strong winds here, this along with saturated ground and especially again those trees being in leaf would of made a significant difference to level/amount of tree damage/felling compared to 1990, even without any of these negatively impacting factors in 1987 the wind gusts during that night clearly would of done extensive tree damage/felling regardless.

The burns day storm still blew down approximately 3 million trees, though this was over a comparatively larger area, but still significant, though the hardest hit areas weren't necessarily exactly the same in every location in the south/southeast, which could of effected perceived severity locally.

It's nice to see that storm Darragh has provoked engagement such as this.. 🙂

I remember Atlantic 252 Ah ok thanks: I was in the far south so perhaps the winds were less here, that chart possibly suggests that.

I realise this isn't specific to Darragh but I wonder how people would rate storms by "league".

I am sure 18th January 2007 needs to be included, perhaps League 3. Damaging gusts of 70-80mph were recorded widely throughout England and 19 people died (Eden). And if ever there was a 'sting in the tale storm', this was it, with the worst of the winds here in Cheshire coming out of blue skies after the main rain belt had moved away

A Face like Thunder I vaguely remember this but not as strongly as the other events I've listed. Perhaps it was less bad in the far south, or I was indoors when it was at its worst.

Sounds a bit like the Burns Day storm as I remember the peak winds of the Burns storm were accompanied by bright sunshine, in fact I think there was little rain on the front (I have vague memories of a cloudy but dry morning before the sun came out and the peak winds kicked in). The next system arriving on the Saturday evening was more active for rainfall (but much less so for wind).

Reminiscent of the scenes around here after the New Year storm of 1976. We haven't had one as severe since although the Burns Day storm of January 1990 came close.

Yet amazingly very quiet here overall. Not even gusting over 50 mph. No idea why we missed out. Thought my Davis anemometer was seizing up a little so checked with local sites around me and I was reading higher then they were. Observations also backed up my view that winds here weren't very strong. No smaller branches off trees or anything. Wheelie bins not getting launched.

StingJet you are indeed correct, after speaking to 2 people in the council and my home insurance company we will be left with the cost to fix the fence. Yesterday I could have cried but have just accepted it and just hoping next year is a better year.

Whats maddening is that one worker told me over the fence from the cemetary that the trees aren’t properly maintained, the tree person at the council was very offended when I suggested this. I will be asking to see records on the upkeep of the tree and I am going to report the tree as can’t afford for that to happen again. With such a large branch falling off it it could be compromised anyway and don’t fancy the whole thing toppling over on to put houses…I said as much to the tree guy and he said to report the tree, so the buck is passed on to us again…argh.

Crazy to think this was only from 60mph winds and we have had stronger though maybe for not as long a period. Makes me worry for the day we get a truly severe storm

Just decided to post after a few days of paying attention to the after effects of the official Severe gale to Storm force winds. My parents didn't allow me to go up the road to measure wind speeds like I normally do as they were too worried about my personal safety so unfortunately I have no idea what the exact readings were though I still got a few 40 and 41mph gusts even during the day on Sunday when I was allowed to go back up the road again. That horrible loud emergency alert that came on my phone Friday night was like I was transported to America.

Anyway here are photos of the aftermath. Most damage I have ever personally witnessed from a wind storm.

Jo Farrow That's appalling. But it's to be expected from insurance companies. They know when it's catastrophic damage they can't quibble so they try to make savings on the smaller claims and they hope that peeps can't be bothered to fight it.

Fiona Robertson easy to pan the insurance co.s.

But here's the official payout figures for 2023 (UK):

Property insurers paid out the equivalent of £13 million every day last year to help homeowners and businesses cope with unexpected and unwanted events like flooding and theft, according to figures published today by the Association of British Insurers.

In total, the industry paid out £4.86 billion to homeowners and businesses in 2023. More than half of this figure - £2.55 billion – was for home insurance claims. This is a near 10% increase on 2022 totals (£2.33bn) and has been driven by weather-related damage.

Jo Farrow Pretty standard for insurance. I've had people asking for my weather data due to insurance companies saying it isn't windy. Any excuse not to pay out.

I guess the next thing they will start to put a clause in that they won't insure you if you live in an exposed place.

Off topic but related to the above, today hastings insurance have retrospectively increased our premium by a big chunk as my wife has lost her wedding ring- premium started months ago and the ring was lost after that.  After 90 mins call we had to give up as essentially unless we pay our whole house insurance etc becomes invalid. Also they only pay out on the initial cost despite inflation, etc so it's much more expensive now to pay for it ans we have to pay excess... basically we now have to cover the cost of the ring. Total scam. Increasing the premium next time is one thing but retrospective is fraud as far I'm concerned. Disgusting industry.

SiGh Does ABI also reveal the profits? It is one thing to say they paid out X million/billion but if their profits are more than X then it doesn't really matter. The profits are surely the bigger indicator of whether they are being unreasonable in their disputation of claims.

Just posting something a bit different from the usual trees, fences and wheelie bins being blown over.

Taken on Tue morning.

I walk to/from work through Exeter quay on most days and everytime we have a big storm blowing in, i tend to look at all the boats that have been dry docked on stilts and think - "don't fancy yer chances" but they always survive. That was until Darragh!

I guess the wind direction had a lot to do with it, the boats are crudely aligned east/west as the quay runs roughly north south, so the usual south westery gales don't catch the boats broadside.  That the one that got toppled had a tarp covering it probably did not help, would have acted like a sail.

Jo Farrow    I’ve got to wait until Saturday morning for the assessor to call and discuss my insurance claim.  Like everyone else, I am expecting resistance from them but I have to try,  I can’t remember the last time I claimed on any house policy but it might have been 20 years ago when our hired car was broken into while we were on holiday in Spain and some personal effects were stolen.  20 years of premiums since then will far exceed the value of this new claim so the insurance industry has definitely made a profit from me over that period.  They can’t deny that we had a serious storm here, but they might claim that my lean-to (verandah?) is not covered or is not of standard construction etc.   I will post the outcome for anyone that’s interested!

Sky Full it may depend on whether you declared that you have a veranda when you first took out the policy. Some co.s online forms will have Qs about outside structures or a first floor extension, for example.

Plus, was the veranda in good nick and well maintained, before the damage? For example, if it's a wooden structure and there are v obvious signs of 'wear and tear' like rotten posts, they'd prob say that it was already in a state of disrepair, before the storm.

Good luck.
