Buzz Given where Met HQ is, this could well be a case of local knowledge in use, rather than an ‘oversight’.  Much better than slavishly following the models.

LoveStorms Probably won't be too bad inland in our area, windy but manageable.

Looks like the Wirral Peninsula will take a pounding Saturday morning and into the afternoon!

Further downgrade on the GFS although UKV looks like an upgrade. Winds won't arrive here until the afternoon with a quiet morning making people wonder what all the fuss is about.

If the local forecast is correct an old style run of the mill storm for us. Think the 77 mph record from 2003 is safe though.

Liam Burge I totally agree with you!!! I'm in Cornwall and I am surprised as many high resolution models have 80mph+ and close to 90mph+ gusts in many locations along the North Cornwall coast and Devon for that matter!!

Seatac19 It is surprising they didn't include Merseyside in the red area. As while its not going to have as strong as winds as West Wales its probably going to be one of the areas with the most disruption on Saturday.

Seatac19 I live just around the corner.. I think Irby will be very badly hit, it usually is in these storms with this wind direction

HarvSlugger Yes it is pretty nasty to say the least. So who is correct. GFS, v ECM and UKV

I was hoping to find some live cams on the coast of Gwynedd (likely to be the hardest hit area with gusts approaching 100mph), but the best I could do is this one in Conwy. This area is expecting gusts between 80-85mph early hours of tomorrow into the late morning.

It's fairly high quality/framerate, has trees for speed gauging and is clearly an exposed location, sitting on the coastline and facing the sea.

Wouldn't be at all surprised to see some football postponed tomorrow!

Merseyside derby kicking off at 12:30 with 70mph winds forecast!

HarvSlugger Trust me, when you own a house its nothing to get excited by. Especially a house built in 1950.

Would the fact that the strong winds are coming from a different direction than usual (compared to a lot of gales) potentially increase the risk of falling trees etc? I've always remembered that that played a role in the devastation in October 1987 because apparently trees build a relative resistance to the usual westerly gales.

What service do you all use for your max wind speed forecasts?

I tend to use the Met Office site for my area as well as xcweather, however xcweather for my area is, on average, forecasting the gusts to be about 5 to 10mpoh lower than the met office and has been doing so for the past few days. xcweather use GFS data.

LetItSnow correct. My step dad has worked in a forest for over 30 years, and he showed me damage caused by a storm a few years ago, explaining that the trees that fell, did so because the wind direction veered round from the north. With the prevailing winds being westerly, this does indeed affect how the trees grow.

StingJet I think anyone attempting the Cribbar in what's forecast would be very much on a suicide mission.

The PIT ECM and UKV both run at a higher resolution than the GFS so would expect them in a short range forecast to have a better handle of it.

For those who don't know

Newquay's biggest surfing spot, the Cribbar, isn't for the faint-hearted. Located alongside Fistral Beach, its 30-40 ft waves are famous for attracting top surfers. The massive waves, described as “death-defying” and like a “beast”, are created when the sea moves over the reefs located 500 ft off Towan Head.

My dad and his Mrs live in Pentrefelin in Gwynedd, just along from Porthmadog. Just got off phone from them as they are currently prepping the house and gardens.

My dad also stated this is for them a unusual direction for the wind, and could show a lot of weak spots on infrastructure, buildings, tree's etc! And to add the very much soaked ground of course.

Tomorrow I will be driving between Northants and London and back during the worst part of the storm for this area, And on the way back my trailer will be empty and its one of our taller trailers! Eeeeek.
