If this is a topic/thread that has been created before let me know, but I've thought about this for a while and recent comments propelled me to start the thread.

It's sort of a historical analysis/game/question rolled into one. What are the best years for UK weather? And of those, what's the most perfect?

There's always going to be bias. There is no objective "best" as we all like something different, but my definition of best for this thread is the general NW biases, aka a great summer and a winter that delivers, though not neccesarily brutally cold. They can be episodic or even rather mild overall, but with decent spells of wintry weather. That will be something that's very location specific but the goal is to take into account the overall UK as much as possible. Spring and autumn definitely would come into equation as well.

If anyone has any ideas for like a system. Not a fan of votes but sort of like a points system. The year that gets the highest points would be the winner. Each season getting a score etc.

Years that come to mind off the bat: 2018, 2003, 1995, 1989 etc. "Vote"/suggest a year.

Interesting, we had a kind of knockout competition on this thread in 2024 or 2023, but I'm not sure it was 'played' to a satisfactory conclusion.

It depends what you see as 'best' and I'm not sure I understand what you mean by 'general NW biases'.

In my 75 years, I will always put 1976 at the top in view of the length and degree of summer, but I don't think it had much else to offer in my part of the world (Surrey).

1975 - perhaps 'better' than 1976 because of the turnround in June from 'winter' to a glorious summer.

1995 - a glorious summer and a cold last week of December, so yes, I agree with you on this one.

Not in my lifetime, but 1947 must rank near the top in terms of cold winter and hot summer.

My 'best' years are actually 1968 (snow in January and the Surrey floods in September; also the SW floods in July) and 1987 (snow in Jan and The Great Storm in October). However, I accept that these two years hardly set the world alight in terms of summer weather.

I have lived in NW England since 1989 and, whilst I have experienced a number of memorable weather events since I moved here, I can say with certainty that only 1995 was a memorable year in that time.

Sorry if this not helpful and is a bit of a ramble, but I hope it may open up some discussion on what I think could be an interesting topic.

2003 looked great.  Bags of sunshine which I will always rate above other factors.  And normally in high summer lots of sunshine = 25°C+ temperatures anyway.

For a year to be perfect the criteria would be:

Two out of three of January, February and December colder than average with at least one heavy lying snow event in each month

April and May to be mostly fine and sunny, also ideally April to contain cold snaps and May thundery episodes,  though these are not essential. Warmth not especially needed.

Two out of three of June, July and August warmer by day and sunnier than average and ideally thundery at times.

Two out of three of September to November to be drier and sunnier than average. Temp irrelevant in autumn.

No year I have lived through meets all of those criteria, but fairly close ones include 1995, 1996, 2003 and 2010. Further back I'm wondering if 1955 met the criteria? Need to check.

I've said this before but a 1985/1995 combo would achieve close to a perfect year. Jan-Feb 1985; Mar-Aug 1995; Sep 1985; Oct 1995; Nov 1985; Dec 1995.

To follow up my last post, and just thinking of a few of the years I'd consider good at first thought:

Months I'd consider "good" in:

2003: Feb Mar Apr Jun Aug Sep Oct (7/12)

2010: Jan Apr May Jun Oct Dec (6/12)

1995: Mar Apr May Jun Jul Aug Oct Dec (8/12)

1989: May Jun Jul Aug Nov (5/12)

1990: Mar Apr May Jul Aug Dec (6/12)

1996: Feb Apr* Jun Jul Sep Nov Dec (7/12)

(*not great, but a seasonable April with decent sun mixed with colder and more unsettled spells, so 'good enough')

1955: Jan Feb Mar Apr Jul Aug Sep (7/12) - from historical records, well before my time!

1947: Feb Jun Aug Sep Oct (5/12) - again from historical records. Not July, as it looked rather cloudy in my area so potentially a rather so-so month despite being warm.

1985: Jan Feb Sep Oct Nov (5/12)

From those, 1995 emerges as the winner, followed by 2003/1996/1955 then 2010/1990 and finally 1989/1947/1985.

These are only of course a selection of years, but are based on the ones I first thought of.

Any year that has decent snow and also nice spring / summer weather; lots of sunshine and drier than average. A thundery year I also rate highly but the issue is it means that the year will most likely end up being wetter than average, 2023 a good example.

An amazing, dry sunny season and then a thundery season like summer such as 2020 was great, but 2020 itself wasn't overly dry or settled, the summer not the best overall. That spring stopped it from being a truly wet year. If 2020 had a spring like 2023/2024, it would have been one of the wettest years. However a summer like 2018 would make 2020 one of the best years.

1921, 1947, 1955, 1959, 1976, 1989, 1995 and 2003 would be my dream years to experience today. 2018 is my favourite I've experienced myself though.

Yes, I'm glad that you've not included any of 1985 between March and August as this was not a good time for weather, certainly not in the south of England. A muggy thundery few days around the Spring Bank Holiday and a few warm days and a spectacular thunderstorm near Crawley in June, but that was about it for the summer, and even Philip Eden rated the June to September period as 'poor' in many parts of the UK.

The more I think about it, 1989 would be limited in its score by its extremely mild and snowless winter transitioning into a cold April. The year really reached its true peak from May through November.

I think a way of doing it would be to rate each month out of either 10 or 5 (5 may be simpler) and the year with the highest points wins. The maximum points saved for the truly best such as August 1995 etc and 0 reserved for the very worst like August 1912. So June 2012 for example would be a 1 because while it was terrible it had convective interest.

I’ll get to scoring some years shortly and see if you agree with me. I will try and be as unbiased as possible.

A Face like Thunder 1985 was certainly a curious year in that Jan/Feb and the autumn were very good but spring and summer mostly poor. March had interesting cold NW-lies at times, though.

The first half of July was also hot and sunny, with the day of Live Aid (the 13th) being the final day of the fine weather, it broke (but without thunder) during the Live Aid night.

However there was a further three days of warm sunny weather around the 23rd-25th or so, meaning the month ended up warmer and sunnier than normal - the only spring or summer month to do so.

LetItSnow Indeed, and specifically May to August and November, all of which were unusually good for the season.

September was very dry but cloudy, and October less-than-spectacular, a dryish but generally cloudy (IIRC) first half giving way to a wet and windy second.

In this area of the country it didn't even have that! Can't remember a single day of even impressive polar maritime convection.

Not quite a zero though because there were four or five sunnyish days spread through the month, so I'd agree on the 1.

Summer8906 I had always thought September 1989 would have been a month with a lot of sunny skies given its warm temperatures and often anticyclonic charts yet surprised me when I realised it was quite dull, even by the old standards. I imagine it had a lot of cloud trapped in the high which isn’t often something I associated with the warmer months. But it is entirely possible with west based highs I suppose, no matter the time of year.

Summer8906 Not a calandar year but the 12 month period March 95 - Feb 96 I would rank as the best 12 months Ive lived through weatherwise, a varied spring with hot and cold spells, a super summer, a mixed autumn with a fine warm Oct and a good winter with deep snow and deep cold but not continuously.

1996 ranks high as a calandar year.

2010 let down by a cool summer.

Right, I'll work backwards. I'll start with my first pick. 2022!

This was a very sunny year of course and while it's the warmest year on record it did feature some wintry potential at the end.

January 2022 didn't have much in the way of snow but at least it was extremely sunny and had plenty of frosts so it felt wintry enough. However, I know that in the north it was milder and cloudier. I'd give this month a 2/5.

February 2022 from memory was just very mild all the way through. If there was any wintry weather I'm forgetting it or it was restricted to the far north. Damaging gales, generally wet. I think I'd give this a 0/5.

March 2022 started with some cloudy weather but the second half was very sunny and warm from memory. I'd go 4/5.

April 2022 had some warm weather mid-month but a cold start and finish. I saw snow fall on the 1st but generally I remember it being a sunny month and it was dry. I'd say 4/5.

May 2022 was very cloudy and generally quite a nothing-y month from memory. I don't think it was a horror show but not inspiring. 2/5.

June 2022 was changeable but fine and dry conditions were never that far away. Having said that there were some short, sharp cold and wet spells, especially in the beginning. 3/5

July 2022 was bone dry and had the extreme heat. Not quite the sun-fest as other classic Julys though so a 4/5 will do.

August 2022 was bone dry, hot and very sunny. Easily amongst the classics. 5/5.

September 2022 was a very interesting month with a very warm southerly first half and a cold autumnal second half. I'd say a 3/5 to be generous.

October 2022 had some very warm and bright weather at times and also an exceptional thundery spell in places around the 23rd. 4/5 perhaps.

November 2022 was very much a bland write off really. Not quite horrendous like 2009 but a lot of mild and wet weather and not really any crisp autumn weather. 1/5.

December 2022 had a very snowy spell here and an exceptionally cold first half, however I do recognise further north it was quite snowless, then it turned milder. I'll go 3/5.

That gives 2022 a score of 35 out of a maximum of 60. Bear in mind that no year will ever be a 60 as it's impossible to stay "perfect" throughout all 12 months.

Will be interesting to get @Summer8906's stamp of approval on these scores before I continue and other members too.

Indeed, if just one change could be made to 2010: replace the August with a warm, sunny one, it would be the clear winner.

LetItSnow I'd agree in most cases but I'd rate January higher, February not quite as dire, and October lower. End result is more or less the same though!

January I would score higher - no snow and slightly milder than average overall but frosty/sunny : 3/5

February not quite a zero as it had a warm sunny spell at the end, at the time of the month when spring-like weather is welcome. Not as dull or as wet as Feb 2020 or 2024, so I'd give it 1.5 / 5

March a bit lower due to cloudy first half, but being generous I could agree

April-August agree

September I'd go a shade lower due to dull, wet spell up to around the 9th, but could agree. The last October I rated above average is now as long ago as 2018.

October was very mild but very wet from around the 12th, I'd struggle to give it more than 2/5.  Not many settled, sunny days, unlike other warm, wet Octobers such as 2001 or 2005.

Nov and Dec agree

In fact the overall score is more or less the same, 35.5 .

In my memorable lifetime:

🥇2018

Combination of the Beast from the East and one of the best Mays and summers on record. Hard to beat but January and December were boring.

🥈2022

Sunny January and a rare combination of a good spring and summer. Notably dry and sunny for much of the year and a freeze in December. Almost no snow as a drawback in both winters and boringly mild autumn.

🥉2013

Similar to 2018 with an even better winter but the cold dragging into June. July rung in the best summer in years at the time.

It’s impossible to have a perfect year, there’ll always be dross at times. A combination of these three years would be a properly classic year. An honourable mention to 2010 as well for the cold winters.

It’s a hard topic because let’s say 2006 doesn’t belong in the best year category because of months like October December etc but I still think it’s a great weather year because months like July September was so great it’s the same with 89 had some terrible months but also had amazing months that’s made it great.

🥇 2022

Jan: 10/10 - Was extremely sunny and dry. Very little wet or dull weather. Despite that temperatures were often mild and there was an element of early spring for much of the month with temperatures often reaching double figures by day.

Feb: 7/10 - Wet but often interesting, some good snowfall around the 18th and a very good sunny spell after that. Was quite a sunny month too despite the rain. However when it did rain it was often heavy so it didn’t drag too much.

March 10/10 - A unsettled first half but was often sunny, the second half was amazing, very warm days well into the high teens on several days but still with cold nights. Record breaking sunny as well. Was a cracking spring month.

April 7/10 - Not an especially exciting month but there was little to fault about it. Had many good springlike days and decent temperatures.

May 5/10 - A good first half saved a pretty dire second half. Some very good early summer warmth here in the first half.

June: 8/10 - A generally warm and sunny month. Particularly in the second half, was let down by a rather cool wet and dull second week.

July: 9/10 - Was often very warm and dry, grass turned brown here for a while after the heatwave. Record breaking high temperatures and prior to that many days hit the mid 20’s easily. Did have quite a miserable final few days to let it down.

August: 10/10 - A fantastic month with some amazing summer weather, was wet however the vast majority of that rain fell in just one day during a very heavy thunderstorm. Lots of very sunny, warm and dry weather.

September: 8/10 - Was the wettest September since 2000 however like August majority of the rain fell here on a single day in a very heavy shower. Most the month was actually rather pleasant with many sunny days, also warm at times.

October: 6/10 - Not much to note, a fairly typical if sunnier than average October

November: 5/10 - Often mild and wet, was generally sunny however.

December: 10/10 - Down to that amazing two week cold spell in December. Very cold minima and temperatures stayed below 0.C here for five days straight. Coldest since 2010 and was dry and sunny

Overall rating: 95/120

🥈 2018

Jan: 9/10 - Fantastic two week cold spell in the middle of the month was also often dry and sunny.

Feb: 9/10 - Beast from the east, but even before then there was still plenty of cold and sunny weather with multiple frosts. Similar to February 2013.

Mar: 5/10 - The two beasts from the east were fantastic but most the most was cold and wet. Wasn’t much early spring weather at all, temperature never exceeded 13.C all month

Apr: 6/10 - The first half was often quite cold wet and dull as well but it did bring a good snowy day here on the 4th. The second half was much better with some good early summer warmth.

May: 10/10 - Absolutely perfect month, a coolish start but then soon turned very warm, dry and sunny and remained that way all month. Nothing too humid or uncomfortable but temperatures reached the mid 20’s comfortably on several days while nights still remained relatively cool.

Jun: 10/10 - Again very little to fault with this month either. Two very good warm spells with a slightly more unsettled spell in the middle of the month, however it wasn’t anything too bad and it did help give a bit of relief from the heat. 31.C reached here in the final week.

Jul: 10/10 - Was virtually cloudless and rainless for the first 10 days. A excellent summer month with just a couple of unsettled days. It did turn a bit cooler and wetter in the closing days but like June it was a welcome relief.

Aug: 6/10 - A good first week but quite an unsettled month at times, often quite cool and cloudy by day. However there was still some nice weather in between although the last week was quite poor.

Sep: 4/10 - Not a particularly memorable month, like August often unsettled, cool and dull. Although a good storm midmonth.

Oct: 9/10 - Had many mild and even warm days at times but some very cool nights with some early frosts. -5.C was reached here on the 29th. Not much rain or dull weather, often very sunny.

Nov: 5/10 - Nothing especially bad but was quite wet and dull. Still had a few decent frosts and had a very mild and sunny second week.

Dec: 10/10 - Was record breaking sunny and had plenty of interesting weather, a very good freezing rain event here on the 15th/16th haven’t seen anything like it. A very good display on freezing fog on Christmas Eve here as well.
overall rating: 93/ 120

🥉 2003

January: 6/10 - Average but with alternating very mild and cold spells, good snowy spell towards the end after a very mild and sunny period

February: 7/10 - Cold but very dry and sunny

March: 9/10 - A mild, dry and sunny month after an unsettled first half. Very similar to 2022 but not as sunny or mild.

April: 8/10 - Another dry, mild and sunny month. A very good warm spell just before Easter before a cold snap. 24.C was reached here on the 16th.

May: 4/10 - Not a great month, often wet and dull. Wasn’t cool though.

June: 7/10 - Dry, warm and sunny, was the warmest June here between 1992-2018.

July: 6/10 - Often warm but a dull month, very good warm and sunny spell around midmonth though.

August: 10/10 - Record breaking dry, often warm and very sunny. Perfect weather for three weeks straight before turning cooler and wetter but was welcome.

September: 7/10 - Dry but otherwise unremarkable

October: 9/10 - Often cold but record breaking dry and sunny.

November: 7/10 - Quite sunny but otherwise a quiet, unremarkable month.

December: 5/10 - Very average month with little to note.
Overall rating: 85/120

2003 and 2022 are the best. 1989 was ruined by the absolutely awful April, 2018 ruined by the awful March/April. 2006 had a great June-July and September, but the rest of the year was a dull cloudfest.

Now onto 2018.

A very sunny year with a classic summer and some serious tastes of winter.

January 2018 I think was quite non-descript. Unfortunately the mid-winter period of this winter was quite dire with the best saved for early and late. I remember some minor snaps but nothing of note and indeed the end of the month was very mild. 1/5.

February 2018 on the other hand was brilliant. Every one talks about the BftE but the month was seasonable all round and I saw snow on the 2nd/3rd as well. 4/5.

March 2018 had the two exceptionally snowy and cold easterlies but there was also a lot of very dull and wet weather around. Maybe this is generous itself but I think no higher than 3/5.

April 2018 had the very hot weather mid-month but a large part of the month was extremely dull. I think this is limited to a 2/5.

May 2018 was very warm sunny and had an exceptional thundery period too. Easy 5/5.

June 2018 was just buckets of sunshine and often very warm. 5/5.

July 2018 much the same, very rarely humid either. 5/5

August 2018 did see the fine weather end prematurely but there was a very thundery spell. Cool end but I don't remember an August 2020 type flip. 3/5

September 2018 wasn't overly warm and I remember a cloudy wet spell early on but most of the time it was generally quite sunny with some lovely autumn sunshine. There was a very easy descent into the autumn. 4/5

October 2018 had some very warm and very cold weather in one, plus it was very sunny and on the dry say. I'm sticking out and saying this is a 5/5.

November 2018 draws up some blanks but it was generally mild, but apparently on the sunny side. I remember some cold synoptics later on that didn't deliver much. 2/5

December 2018 was such an unfortunate end to a classic year, a horrifically dull and nothingy December. 0/5.

That gives 2018 a score of 39, 4 points ahead of 2022!

So far:

1. 2018 - 39 points

2. 2022 - 35 points

I will literally go by memory rather than what models tell me the weather was doing.

1996 for me the best year. Cold start to the year and a snow event down here. Spring was pretty average. Summer was just amazing (not because football came home!). Autumn was bang on point albeit slightly wetter than I would like.

2003 and even 2010 close by in 2nd and 3rd. 2018 more recently a favourite of mine.

Years to forget. 2000 and 2014. Shocking years for weather and far too wet!

Closest we've come to a perfect year recently would be 2003, 2018 and 2022. Going back a bit further, maybe 1989 and 1995 would belong in that tier too. None of them stick out as head and shoulders above the rest.

Worst - 2012 (in my lifetime) stands out. 2000, 2002, 2008, 2015, and now 2024 also stick out as pretty dire. Many would say 2023 but looking back that year had quite a few redeeming features among the rubbish!

Let's take a look at 2013 now. This was a very continental type year with a lot of both snow and heat.

January 2013 had a long protracted cold spell for about two weeks that delivered in many areas. However, the month was spoiled by a very mild start and end. 3/5.

February 2013 didn't have much of note going on, but it was seasonable throughout. I actually saw snow falling on my birthday this year. I'd give this a 3/5.

March 2013 may not appease to those who are looking for spring to get going by March, but you can't deny this was a truly extraordinary month. How I wish this month's synoptics had occured two months before however! Still, a 5/5.

April 2013 is slightly underrated to me. It was an interesting April that started with absolutely bitterly cold weather but there was some warm sunshine later on. It was dry too. Had the strange distinction of being a month I can recall blizzards and 20C+ sunshine in the same month (the 4th and 23rd-ish). 3/5.

May 2013 did have some warm sunshine on the 6th which stands out very clearly in my mind but a lot of the month was very cool. The month doesn't stand out as dire to me though. To be conservative I'll give this a 1/5.

June 2013 comes up a complete blank for weather memories. Records suggest it was dry but cool and dull. There weren't any extremes of temperature in any direction. I will give this a 2/5.

July 2013 is one of the classic Julys we've ever seen. This is a true proper July (2022, take note!) with buckets of sunshine and frequent hot temperatures but never anything extreme. Plus there were some fabulous thunderstorms at the end. I remember being kept awake all night the 22nd/23rd by constant storms. As dawn broke I finally thought it was ending only to hear more rumbling! Another storm on the 27th brought fabulous lightning. I was at a wedding that day and we were all in suits and dresses sweating, then a fabulous thunderstorm broke out during the reception later on. 5/5

August 2013 was decent as well. Big storms locally on the 2nd and 5th, then rather variable but never all that terrible. I'd say a 3/5.

September 2013 draws blanks yet again. I remember a strong wind storm this month around the 16th, otherwise cool and dull but not a horror show. 2/5

October 2013 was a wet, dull and damp month with only the interesting St. Jude storm making it all that interesting. I remember a cut off low on the 11th brought an absolute deluge across the south-east with localised flooding. 1/5.

November 2013 was chilly but dry and sunny. Not a whole lot to say about it but it was seasonably pleasant. 3/5.

December 2013 was mild, snowless and was miserable over Christmas. The only thing that stopped it being entirely terrible was anticyclonic weather early on, though even then it was mild. I think that useable weather stops it being a total 0 though... 1/5. Perhaps generous of me.

That gives 2013 an overall score of 32. This year was really let down by the last quarter despite a pleasant November. It was the setting in of the 2010s/2020s grot we've come to know. Still, it scores in the 30s, though ranks behind 2018 and 2022.

So far:

nothing will ever beat 1995 IMO and will never change that opinion ..i just about remember 1976 outside of the May - Aug period it wasn't anything to write home about apart from Cold Dec (which i have no memory of).

People will argue that the first 2 months of 1995 were wet and mild..but that just adds to the beauty of 1995 for me as it had everything from wet and mild through dry and hot to very cold and snowy..i dont buy the 1996 vote ..a very memorable year for me as i got married in 1996 but the weather was well ok ..winter wasn't particularly wet or mild.. summer wasn't particular hot or dry..Dec was a poor man's version of 1995

2003 outside of the hot summer..spring was warm but other than that not much else going on here

2006 Could have been a good winter but never really got going..warm end to spring led to a very warm June and hot July ..August was a relief (dry cloudy and somewhat cool) autumn and Dec were very warm esp Sept and October

2009 is an interesting year ..quite cold start to the year and a snowy first half of February..after a warm June summer never really got going ..in the SE where i was it fairly dry and reasonably warm..the year ended with a cold and relatively snowy Dec

My favourite years would be 2010 2013 2018 and 2022 - long spells of anticyclonic conditions mostly in the April to September half of the year. These years also featured some intense cold spells.

Late Spring/Summer 2018 being the best example for sustained settled conditions, possibly caused by Rossby Waves becoming stalled in a Wave 7 Pattern with an Azores-Scandi Anticyclone link-up over Western Europe.

Favourite Winter Months for Snow and/or Intense Cold: December 2010, March 2013, February 2018 and December 2022.

Favourite Summer Months for Prolonged Warm settled weather: June 2010, July/August 2013, June/July 2018, August 2022.
