A new sunshine thread for 2025. PLEASE can we have a lovely & memorable sunny year this time around? Bored of all the below average sunshine years lately! 2021, 2023 & 2024 all way under average sunshine for my location!

11 days into January and we're already past the 40 hours we recorded in December. That's a start!

18.4 hrs here in the first 11 days so December's total has been surpassed. January 2024 was the last sunnier than average month here so maybe this one can repeat that.

1st-15th January 2025 sunshine 🌞

A much better month for most at this point comparing to the gloomfests of November and December. In fact, many places have surpassed their December totals already.

Interesting to note that the theme from October onwards last year is continuing with North East or upper eastern coastal areas doing best for sunshine. Is the North East the new sunniest place in UK?? Lol.

We'll probably be at around 54 hours at the end of the day. The 1991-2020 average for the entire month is 61 hours, so we won't be far off that after just 16 days.

It'll be the 7th sunnier than average January in 8 years for us (or 10th in the last 13 years).

It doesn't mean much however. January 2024 was the only month with more than 110% of average sunshine in the entire year.

SunSean here is another time similar when the  northeast was one of the sunniest, from Nov 2010 to March 2011, the charts below show the actual value regarding sunshine.image.thumb.png.abdf7386957bffc043a6a8a09962fa80.png

Jonnoramo87 Yeah they've actually had a crazy run. Boulmer have had more accumulated sunshine than Shoeburyness since October which is ridiculous considering we're in or around the South East, supposedly the sunniest area of the UK. I'd understand a month or 2 maybe but being sunnier than us for 4 months in a row LOL.

SunSean I know imagine if for the spring/summer the southeast had the following

April 2012

May 2021

June 2012

July 2007

August 2008

September 2017

while the northeast had

April 2011

May 2020

June 2006

July 2018

August 2022

September 2023

Imagine how everyone would react then lol.

The final week to 10 days will determine the fate of how sunny the month will be locally. There was quite a bit of sun up until this anticyclone built, now it's an exceedingly dull outlook. If we get pm air during the final 10 days then it could boost sunshine back up. If an easterly element gets mixed in or we get a lot of troughs it could be a fair deal duller.

The run of sunny Januaries we've had from 2022-2024 is notable and no doubt will get a historic page some day in the future.

Felt very pleasant yesterday, while chilly, when the sun came out here after the fog withdrew late morning. Felt a little like Spring, almost as though things were ahead by a few weeks. Then the white blanket has decided it’s come to take a holiday back here today suddenly making everything feel a bit gloomy again. 😕 Although at least the Stratocumulus cloud isn’t super thick; therefore isn’t as dull-looking outside as some other cloudy days can be during the main part of Winter. A contrast to yesterday though.

Weather app showing next few days to be cloudy in general, so that could very well be time up for sunnier weather for a while. But am hoping it turns out a little brighter than what the app shows, despite the setup for the next few days looking to be a good friend for the white blanket in the sky. Somehow wonder (but doubt it now) that the ridging to the North of the UK becomes stronger again as it wouldn’t take much for those Lows out West next week to be forced somewhat further South and East and bring a cleaner, better, Easterly flow. Otherwise I worry that the Atlantic Lows next week will just bring a lot of cold rain (maybe wintry over Northern hills) as they spiral around in the mid-Atlantic attempting to disrupt close by, or over, the UK against the weak heights to the North or North-East. Maybe some transient, brighter, breaks, between each weather system that try to attack from the West.

I must admit that since it could be a fairly long shot to get a high-quality Easterly with deeper cold for next week now, I think I would prefer the Atlantic Low Pressure systems squeezing through as far East as they can. Also at a bit more of a Northerly latitude, to bring more in the way of the brighter Polar Maritime flows on there Southern flanks. Rather that, anyway, than these Lows becoming slow-moving over the UK/Western UK and just fizzling out before the next Low tries to come in. Not helped I guess by the deep(ish) upper Atlantic trough lurking about close by to the West with its fight against the heights to our North-East acting as a barrier for it to shift further East. It is all an evolving situation still, including how far East or West the pattern continues to set up, even though it feels like the general pattern is laid out now. Things could (kind of) turn out for the better or the worst, subjectively will depend what sort of weather you feel like wanting.

Have to say, some of the brighter weather this current High Pressure spell has brought here will be missed. It has been a fairly reasonable January for some sun so far, but please sun don’t take too long to come back! ☀️ And, being a bit greedy, some more snow at some point 😛

SunSean I was surprised by your optimism regarding January, as it's been a complete gloomfest here.  Clicking on your link the Manchester station is at the bottom, which backs up my feeling about this month.  Rostherne (Grtr Man) is significantly sunnier than my location closer to the hills too.

More sun please, SAD is taking its toll!!

About 28 hours of sunshine for the first half of January which isn't terrible. January average is about 60 hours, however I see it's been duller than most parts of the country and even the Midlands...

Outlook is looking dull again so increasingly likely this month will be another dull one.

Sunniest spot in the UK yesterday, very rare for a central location like here!

It's turning out to be a very sunny month here. We've just ticked over 70 hours this afternoon, when the 1991-2020 average is 61 hours. With 6 days remaining We could end up quite a bit above.

Ironically it will be the first month with more than 110% of sunshine since January 2024 and only the third since February 2023 (June 2023 and September 2023 being the other two).

London has had a shocking 2nd half of the month, and will fail to reach the average of 62 hours, will probably end up in the low or mid 50s. It'll be the 5th consecutive dull month.

Given there was no sunshine at all today, the figure up to yesterday can be used as the month total:

59.0 hours of sunshine this month here, average January total is 63 hrs so hasn't been overly dull.

However from the 11th - 23rd January there was only 7.1 hours of sunshine.

25th - 30th January recorded 27.9 hours which has helped a lot to recover this January from being very dull.

Looks like Leeming in North Yorkshire will finish on around 82 hours of sunshine for January.

Over the past 5 months- September 2024 through January 2025, Boulmer (472 hours) have had more sunshine than Shoeburyness (421 hours) LOL.

So much for being in one of the "sunniest areas of the UK" and as for Eastbourne, just wow. They're duller than most places up North now apparently lol.

In Exeter we ended up with 62 hours of sunshine and our average is 58 hours…this was helped immensely by the last 2 days of the month having over 7 hours of sunshine each day. It’s felt like a fairly cloudy month overall peppered with a handful of nice sunny days.

Sick of the sight of cloud to be honest, I am grasping on to the hope of a sunny warm spring and summer and with the hope it doesn’t take forever to warm up like the past 2 springs, I’ve been reading about a potential ssw on here with a sense of dread…if we get a late one again this year it’ll be the third one of the trot and we all know how those ruined the past 2 springs

Heathrow with 55.5 hours for January, slightly below average and the 5th consecutive dull month.

Hopefully February gives us something with more than 80 hours.
