The best March since 2012.  Sunny, dry and a fantastic spell of high pressure.  Mean maximum temperatures were 1.9°C above average across the UK, with the largest anomaly being +2.2°C in Scotland.  Northern Ireland had an incredible 192.5 hours of sunshine, close to double the normal sunshine.  England had it's second sunniest March on record with 168.1 hours.

Mean minimum temperatures were close to average, with Scotland actually having an anomaly of -0.5C.  During the spell of high pressure there were some very low dew points.  Despite temperatures approaching 20°C dew points were only around 0°C with relative humidity below 30%.  Excellent clothes drying weather!  There were some fantastic sunsets too.  Only 58% of average rainfall was recorded during the month, potentially contributing to the dry theme as we approached the infamous summer...

I would rank March 2022 as even higher than 2012 despite it being cooler and wetter. The first half was quite unsettled here however I wouldn’t have said the weather was in anyway poor as it still had a lot of sunny and relatively mild weather but the period between the 16th-28th was absolutely perfect. Days of unbroken sunshine and temperature into the high teens on nearly everyday during that spell. Really brought an early taste of spring. The sunshine stats were extremely impressive with me recording just shy of 190 hours of sunshine. March 2012 was the next sunniest at 158.

2012 at the time seemed unbeatable but 2022 blew it out the water despite the more noticeable rainfall although it was still quite a dry month nonetheless. Who knows what March 2032 will bring now. Haah

That's an incredible amount of sunlight for March, considering most of the month is before the equinox.  190 hours is closer to what you'd expect in May!

I was thinking of making a thread for March 2022 a few months back as part of going through various events / months in recent years, but to me it didn't really stand out compared to some much more extreme weather events in 2022.

Still it was a very pleasant month especially in the second half, though couldn't enjoy it that much as I had A-level exams coming up. One of the earliest points out of any spring of recent I remember seeing the soil dry up, especially in exposed areas due to the dry spell and strengthening early spring sunshine. Daytime temps responded well, reaching the high teens 22nd - 26th.

Some photos from this month here:

Earthshine more so from my part of Scotland as well. The sun never seemed to stop shining all month. My May average for sunshine is around 190 hours as well.

I often think March 2022 and indeed Spring 2022 are underrated  by most people due to memories of March 2012 and Spring 2020. I've often seen people on here calling it "not up to much or average" when in reality it was a very good month and spring as a whole.

Here March 2022 (194hrs, 23.0mm, 5 days of rain >1mm) was every bit as much as good as 2012 (201hrs, 24.6mm, 3 days of rain >1mm). They had the same mean min temp, with 2012 pipping 2022 by about a degree on the mean max due to warmer days late on.

Both months were actually pretty similar, with a cooler, wetter first 8 days before the settled weather started. 2022 actually managed a dusting of snow in this period. Both months had quite a bit of fog, to be expected here when it's settled in early Spring.

You could slot either month into the 2023-2024 period and they would sit 2nd and 4th sunniest (with June 2023 top as you'd expect). That's how good they were and how bad the last two years have been!

Fond memories of the second half of March 2022 and the first tanning of the year. Shame about the cold blip at the end / start of April as much of April was very pleasant too!

That was a great month and doesn't really get spoken about much nowadays. First 3 days were awful but after that it never really stopped being settled and dry. The two week warm spell in the second half of the month was great, although never got as warm as 2012 or 2021 it was sunnier and longer lasting. Saw some falling snow on the 31st which I don't really like in March but was interesting to see at least. I was in sixth form and have a lot of memories of skipping lessons and spending all day sunbathing in the park across the road in that long sunny spell.

That sunshine chart speaks for itself...
