Don't think anyone has done this topic yet but as we have ones for the 80s, 90s and 00s it seems fair we also have one for the 2010s as well.

As with the 1990s and to a big extent in the 2000s as well mildness in the winters was common although there were some cold and/or snowy moments.

Summers a whole mix as with the other decades but this one now focuses on the 2010s. As with my previous topic on the 1990s I'll focus on winters and summers as to me they are the main action points of each year.

Ranking the years by winters and summers

Winters

1st     2009/10 - What else could it have been other than the winter that opens up the 2010s. Was often cold and/or snowy, especially late Dec 09 into early Jan 10.

2nd     2010/11 - This winter was made special by the coldest December since 1890. Shame it didn't continue and it was the less cold Jan 11 and the mild wet Feb 11 that pulled this one down below winter 09/10.

3rd     2012/13 - It was a close run thing between 2012/13 and 2017/18 for which one took 3rd position as both featured cold and/or snow at times. 2013 had the very cold March and 2018 had the beast but it was the colder Jan in 2013 that decided it in the end.

4th     2017/18 - See winter 2012/13 description above.

5th     2014/15 - Again another toss up for 5th and 6th position between two winters that featured a cold and snowy spell at some point. Feb 12 was a more prolonged cold and snowy spell than late Jan/early Feb 15 was but the milder Dec in 11 put 2014/15 above 2011/12.

6th     2011/12 - See winter 2014/15 description above.

7th     2018/19 - This winter had interest in its own right especially the big contrasts during Feb 19 but was overall a mild winter so ranked below all the others that had more snow interest.

8th     2016/17 - The last winter I had available before the 3 vile ones below. This winter was generally boring and mostly on the mild side but at least generally dry which rated it above the bottom 3 as a result.

9th     2019/20 - It was hard to get these ranked in order as they all seemed as equally vile as each other. All 3 were mild and wet. I put 2019/20 as marginally the least bad of the bottom 3 as in Jan 20 there was at least a break from the relentless mild and wet with a dry spell in that month.

10th     2013/14 - Although the windstorms did give this winter interest in their own right it became too much in the end and with no real break from wet or stormy and only a brief shower of wet snow at the end of Jan 14 this gives 2013/14 no better than 10th.

11th     2015/16 - The honours of bottom spot therefore go to winter 2015/16 and what other thing could decide it than the most vile horror show December of them all. This winter deserves to be at the bottom as even Jan and Feb 16 couldn't redeem it and did little to make up for the horrendous start to the winter.

Summers

1st     2018 - Has to be this one. The only truly decent summer of the 2010s. June and July were very good but a common theme of the 2010s struck with August letting it down somewhat but wasn't enough to deny summer 2018 top spot.

2nd     2013 - It was that July that gifted summer 2013 second spot and if June and August had been better it might have beaten 2018. The cool June compared with June 2018 was what decided it since both August 2013 and 2018 were mixed.

3rd     2014 - This was a toss up between 2014 and 2010. The thundery activity in June and July 2014 was what put 2014 above 2010 which in itself wasn't that bad a summer either. August 2014 was the let down in summer 2014 but was quite dry after the ex tropical storm had passed which decided 2014 over 2010 in the end.

4th     2010 - See summer 2014 description above.

5th     2017 - A front loaded summer but no where near the best of the decade with the poor August cancelling out the good June and with an average July this meant no more than a mid rating of 5th for summer 2017.

6th     2019 - Another average summer when you cancel out all the heat with the cooler wetter periods. Not a big fan of sudden heat spikes which stopped this summer rating any higher than it did.

7th     2015 - June was OK but not the best but I do remember some drier spells. July 2015 was awful apart from a heat spike and a little thunder. August was a typical mixed one as usual for a 2010s summer. Summer 2015 didn't deserve anything above 7th position.

8th     2016 - Don't remember anything standing out in a good way about summer 2016. June was below par and July was mixed although it did feature a short hot spell. August you guessed it was again mixed.

9th     2011 - Generally a cooler than average summer which was sub par in all 3 months. Nothing really redeemed this one at all and would have deserved bottom spot if only there wasn't an even worse summer in the decade that spared summer 2011 the fate of bottom spot.

10th     2012 - It could be no other summer at the bottom than the wet washout that was 2012. It never really let up the whole summer and it was often cool with it especially in June and July. A rare thing for 2010s summers was the August was actually the "best" month of 2012 and only because it was warmer than June and July even if just as wet.

Overall ranking of years

I have used a points system here based on where I ranked the summer as well as the previous and following winter to rank the years overall. Summers take double points to remove the bias of using the winters either side of the year. The summers are ranked from 1st taking 20 points down to 10th taking just 2 points. The previous and following winters use the same system except 1st takes 10 points down to 10th taking just 1 point. Previous winters are 2009/10 to 2018/19 whilst following winters are 2010/11 to 2019/20. The following is the result I came up with.

                              OVERALL Summer        Winter           Winter

Position YEAR     SCORE      (Score x2)     (Previous)     (Following)

1st          2010     34              14                  10                  10

2nd         2018     32              20                   7                    5

3rd         2013     28              18                    8                    2

4th         2014     25              16                    2                    7

5th         2017     23              12                    3                    8

6th         2011     19                4                    9                    6

7th         2019     17              10                    4                    3

8th         2012     16                2                    5                    9

9th         2015     15                8                    6                    1

10th       2016     11                6                    1                    4

Overall I did expect it to be quite close between 2010 and 2018 as to which year of the 2010s would come out on top. It would seem the very highly rated winters of 2009/10 and 2010/11 were what sealed top spot for 2010 over 2018 and even the number 1 rated summer 2018 wasn't enough to win for 2018 mostly thanks to the somewhat average winter to close out the year.

A good result for 2013 which gets a stand out 3rd position mostly from it's quite high ratings from winter 2012/13 and the summer of 2013. It was let down by the dire winter 2013/14 though that saw out the year.

4th and 5th were quite close as expected with 2014 just beating 2017. 2014's summer was probably what sealed 4th position over 5th for 2017 as both years had one quite good winter at one end and a quite poor to dire one at the other.

An even closer group follows these between 6th and 9th positions. To my surprise 2011 beat the others in this group and this could be largely down to the high scoring winter 2010/11 that dragged 2011 up the list somewhat. 2019 performed largely as expected with an average summer and low rated winters either side of this.

2012 I was expecting to come last or 9th but it surprisingly came 8th. It might have been the above average to quite high rated winters that did this, I was expecting 2015 to come last but to my surprise it didn't despite the dreadful winter closing the year out and the below average summer. Maybe winter 2014/15 was what saved 2015 from bottom spot.

It is therefore 2016 to my surprise that ended up taking bottom spot here as the worst year of the 2010s overall. A diabolical winter to open up the year. A sub par summer overall and a boring winter to close out the year. Maybe not that surprising after all.

Hmm, I highly dispute 2016 being last. The winter was bad but the spring was interesting. I think the summer was actually somewhat underrated. I’ve often spoken of my unpopular fondness for June 2016 for its incredible amounts of thunder. July and August were very dry down here and the summer from about mid July through mid September was often very warm to very hot and useable. Plus it had the best autumn of my life so far and was as close to a perfect autumn you can find. Hot September, very dry and quaint October and a cold November. After an extended dry spell had begun in July the dry ground and decreasing temperatures meant the colours were spectacular. December was poor though

If the winter hadn’t have been terrible it would have been one of my better years for weather.

I’d probably rank it

The rankings I came up with are based on my experiences and even I was surprised to see 2016 come up last. Was expecting 2012 or 2015 to end up last

Maybe I could use some actual data at some point for the 2010s and the 1990s and 2000s threads as well to see how they compare with the rankings I put in those from my experiences.

1st: 2018 definitely comes out on top simply for a spectacular summer preceded the amazing February leading into the BFTE and two more snow events in March. May was great and October was lovely.

2nd: 2010 - incredible Jan and Dec. Spring was a pretty good, June was great, autumn was a decent one too. Let down by July & especially August, the best years can't have a bad high summer period imo.

3rd: 2019 - unpopular maybe but the best weather this year came when it was meant to. I loved the springlike Feb, pleasant May and the high summer period of late June to early Aug was really good (unlike what many say, it was dry warm and sunny throughout even ignoring the heat spikes). Late September to December was miserable but it's the least important time of year to me weatherwise anyway.

4th: 2014 - consistently warm and sunny. June, July & Sep were all great, as was March. The rest of the year was good enough even if spring was a little unsettled. However a lot of points docked for the worst Jan and Feb I've ever known, and a poor August.

5th: 2011 - A bad summer (not as bad as 2012 though) sandwiched between what was otherwise a really nice year with an exceptional April and a pleasant autumn with a heatwave in Sep/Oct.

6th: 2016 - it gets tough here but the second half of 2016 was good, even if the SW where I was missed out a lot on the Aug/Sep heat. The first half of the year was not good. Didn't like April or June at all.

7th: 2017 - Somewhat like 2011. Outside of late June to September, a good year, with a nice spring, mid June heat and Nov/Dec. Late June to September was consistently dull and wet which ruined the year as a whole.

8th: 2013 - the year was almost a complete car crash but right in the middle came a beautiful July with a decent August right after. Rest of it goes in the bin, especially since we didn't get a millimetre of lying snow in the "famously snowy" January-March period, then a rotten spring and then a stormy end to the year.

9th: 2015 - should be better based on how dry it was but it was entirely devoid of heat. The second hottest day of the year came in APRIL with the hottest reaching just 26c. A good April and a pleasant March/June/September keep this from the bottom making it not a total disaster.

10th: 2012 - needs no explanation. First 3 months of the year were nice especially March. Then.... the rest of the year was catastrophic. Our wettest and dullest year of the decade BY FAR. Worst summer of my lifetime and it didn't let up afterwards with 7 out of the last 9 months of the year recording over 100mm of rainfall

For me overall as a package, the 2010s were pretty mediocre.  There were far too many unimpressive years in this decade and as for thunder.........an absolute shocker.

2018 was the outstanding year, then probably 2013 but after that I'm struggling.

Take 2010, brilliant for winter cold/snow at the front and back end but for a good chunk of the year, not a lot happen.

2014 had a good July and September but I found it tedious for most of the rest of the year.

2015, 2016, 2017 and 2019 were much about nothing.

2011 had the April and end of September and early October but the rest was forgettable.

2012 was diabolical

2010’s weren’t an overly exciting decade for weather.

Good years:

2018 would be the far winner having a cold extended winter. A exceptional early summer with a phenomenal May. A very decent October and a record breaking sunny December. 2018 was also a record sunny year here I recorded just shy of 1,700 hours of sunshine.

2010 would be next up as while it was a very cold year it was generally very sunny and settled. Had some glorious snowy, winter weather and while it was cold a lot of the time April, late May and June did bring some very good warm weather.

2013 I would put next due to how good the summer was. The winter while snowy and cold did feel really bleak and the exceptional cold at March while at first was amazing it dragged on way too long for my liking. April was settled but the cold was never far away and May while milder was often dull and unsettled. Summer 2013 was superb though especially July. June and August were also decent months but June lacked the heat whereas August lacked the sunshine. Both were very dry months as well. Autumn had the perfect balance of wet and unsettled but also cold, warm and settled weather and December was very stormy.

Average years:

2019 - Put 2019 at the top of this list as while it had plenty good weather it had just enough poor weather at the wrong times. It had a dry and exceptionally sunny winter with a brilliant early warm spell in late February. A good April was sandwiched between a wet March and a cool and wet May to let the spring down. The summer was an unusual combo of very wet but also noticeably warm and sunny. Autumn had a fairly meh September although it had a fairly good warm spell in it. October was cold but often settled and November was unsettled but did have two noticeable cold snaps. December started cold and settled but progressively got worse.

5) 2017 - 2017 was let down massively by a poor summer. It had a very dry and sunny January, a very sunny spring with April being exceptionally dry and May being consistently warm and sunny. A very sunny and dry November and a decent December. Very poor February, summer and September.

6) 2016 - No season was especially bad but every season had some very poor weather. January was extremely wet and dull, April was cold and wet, September and December was very dull. However it did have a good February, May and September did have some very warm weather. November was extremely cold but also very sunny and dry.

7) 2015 - A very sunny winter, April and September but a rather wet year. May, July, November and December were all extremely wet. A very poor late spring, mid summer but it did have a very good April, early autumn.

Poor years

8 ) 2014 - Was saved by an excellent July but a very dull year here. Less than 1,200 hours of sun. A very wet and dull winter, a poor spring and an extremely dull autumn. Although September was very d dry and warm it was still dull. July was the sunniest on record that year though randomly.

9) 2012 - Mainly down to its April and summer. Summer 2012 an appaling summer. It did however have an excellent February, March and the last week in May was very warm. Also had a fairly decent autumn but was cold.

10) 2011 - A year that was generally dull, wet and unsettled. Similar to 2014 but didn’t have the summer to beat it. Only redeeming factor of 2011 was a very good April. The rest of the year was either wet, dull or unseasonably cold or mild. The summer was cold but then the autumn was extremely mild.

 SunChaserWales 2019 would’ve been an excellent year if some of the months were swapped about I think.

Best year for me is probably 2013 - a lot of snow in the winter (March included), followed by the hottest summer since 2006. We had a good thunderstorm on my birthday in August that year. A fairly continental year.

2018 and 2022 stand out for their amazing summers and having well above-average sunshine levels, so they are top 3 without a doubt. Every season in 2022 was sunnier than average here (and in 2018 only spring was a bit duller than average). Both years are the gold standard for me in terms of sunny, warm weather.

2010 was good for the cold, snowy weather at both ends of the year, but the summer was mediocre.

As for the rest of the decade - it's hard for me to rank them. 2012 was an obvious stinker that ranks last for me due to the rotten summer, and 2011 would probably be 2nd last for a similar reason (summer 2011 wasn't a washout like 2012 but it was cold). The other years are kind of meh - none of them stand out for being particularly great or particularly bad.

Preety sure we've had this thread before.

I'd rate 2018 the best year overall simply for the excellent spell late April to late July. The Autumn was seasonal. A seasonal winter as well. December not up to much but overall a great year.

2010 next, would be top if it hadn't been for the coolness of summer though May and June offered some heat. Jan, Feb, Nov and Dec excellent.

2013 third place, very cold first half but interesting, excellent July, remainder of the year seasonal except Dec.

Struggle to rate all the other years other than 2012 is bottom, followed by 2011. 2017 I quite enjoyed a varied year but a poor summer. 2014 except July and 2016 were uninteresting. 2015 was mixed. 2019 had heat in the summer but otherwise quite forgettable.

Looking at the England E and NE annual ratings that I did not so long ago, I have 2010 first with 48, 2018 second with 46, and 2013 third with 42. Then there was a cluster of years on 40 (2012, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2019), then 2014 (37) and 2011 last with 36.

I was surprised to see 2012 that high, I thought it would come out lower. I did rate the summer as easily the worst of the decade, but it was offset by some of the months early and late in the year. For example, March 2012 had that amazing sunny spell at the end with diurnal ranges widely of 15 to 20C, and 26/27 October 2012 was the only time I saw snow in October (which even briefly gave a slight on the ground). The lowest rated year 2011 did have an outstanding April and another outstanding warm sunny spell at the end of September and beginning of October, but otherwise not a lot sticks out.

All of the 2010s years rated considerably higher than 2002 and 2024 (29), though.

Really? Which ones? Possibly February and June could swap but every month from March to September had good spells. I was in year 9 that summer and remember it being a warm one

The best would surely be between 2010, 2013 and 2018 so I'll just do ratings of each month of those and not bother with the rest for now. All for this area.

2010: Jan 9/10; Feb 4/10 (cold but very wet); March 5/10; April 8/10; May 6/10; June 8.5/10; July 5.5/10; August 4/10; September 5/10; October 8/10; November 6/10; December 9/10

Total 78 / 120

2013: Jan 8/10; Feb 6/10; March 5/10 (the cold was very interesting but it wasn't sunny enough); April 7/10; May 5.5.10; June 5/10; July 8.5/10; August 7/10; September 5/10; October 4/10; November 7/10; December 3/10.

Total 71/120

2018: Jan 4/10; Feb 8/10; March 5/10 (snow was great but it was wet and miserable outside of this); April 4.5/10; May 9/10; June 7.5/10; July 8.5/10; August 5.5/10; September 6.5/10; October 8/10; November 3.5/10; December 3.5/10

Total 73.5/120

Looks like 2010 first, then 2018, then 2013. If summer was weighted more highly, though, 2010 would probably drop to third place.

Worst to best cos that’s more fun 😂

2015: a slight unpopular opinion perhaps I was going to join the everyone with 2012 but I felt like 2012 had a lot of better moments 2015 apart from a seasonal winter it just had nothing worst summer since the return of summers in 2013 September was to cool for my liking December just disgusting November also terrible the only year where the best month doesn’t jump out at you.

2012: almost as bad as 2015 but is saved by February March the hot spell in May and a half decent August and first 10 days of September and a very seasonal autumn still though April and June are amongst the worst ever.

2011: a very annoying year! The warmest year on record but mostly because of warmth in every season apart from the summer April was great though but almost every other month was mediocre to bad.

2016: moving into more meh years now then bad and this is exactly what 2016 was some great months August September November some terrible months April December June and then some half decent ones July march just a very meh year.

2014: a very middle ground year with some great months June, July  but some terrible months January, February.

2010: a great year an amazing January and December less amazing but still good June and February and a great spell of hot weather in May a few mediocre to bad months though stop it from being higher.

2013: a strange year as it had some months that were some of the best ever July January March etc but had some massive flops the spring and December still though the good was really good.

2019: some people may argue this is too high but I think it was truly a great year and the type of year I want in the future with climate change because in every month there was  actual decent warm spells instead of just continuous mild weather anyway January was underrated this year plenty of cold weather February speaks for itself March was was a perfect way to close out a winter some cold weather but warm spells April had the warmest Easter on record May had some warmth mid month the summer was decent with hot spells in every month probably the 4th best of the decade I felt like the hot spells always came at the best times an example of this being in late August a great way to close out the summer the autumn was pretty bad but October was cool which sounds nice November also had cold moments December was crap though.

2017: probably my most unpopular opinion on here but I think 2017 was truly a great year January was sunny and average so by todays standards freezing 😂 the spring was lovely mild and dry May in particular sounds amazing with one of the best May warm spells ever right around my birthday period the summer was good imo hot spell in June and some warm spells in July the August/September period was meh but doesn’t sound terrible but October was warm and dry and November and December had some of the best cold spells in years.

2018: was always going to be 2018 a great Snow in February/March and overall a cold winter and then after this we had possibly the best extended summer ever an amazing year wish I could live it every year.

i was briefly living back in the UK from the beginning of May 2014 - End of Dec 2016.

Summer of 2014 had a warm July and first half of August second half of August was very wet..it was warm around Halloween

2015 was just average throughout apart from the one day heat spike at the start of July..and obviously the horrendously mild and damp Dec of 2015

2016 nothing much going on here apart from a wet June and the heat in August and again in Mid Sept

the only snow i saw in the time i was back home was a brief 10 min snow shower at the end of November 2014

 SunChaserWales Summer 2019 I feel would’ve been a fantastic summer had it not been so wet. It was considerably warm here and it was also rather sunny. I remember many warm days. I had a weeks holiday during July 2019 and every day was a scorcher. The temperature was above 21.C every day here from the 11th-27th. Which for my part of the country is a lot.

 Harry233  Obviously it would be different up in Scotland but where I was (in Plymouth) all 3 months were drier than average, even June! July was a lovely month, especially the first half. I find it to be pretty underrated and maybe overshadowed by 2018. Just two days failed to reach 20c, the same as 2018 and less than 2022. Only 4 days had measurable rainfall and it's actually our 3rd sunniest July since 2007.

August was decent too, nice weather with the exception of about 10 days midmonth. Then the BH heatwave.

 Jackmonday06 It depends on the type of rain, I guess. If you have a southerly or easterly with fairly low pressure and frequent generalised outbreaks of thundery rain separated by multi-day warm sunny spells featuring local thunderstorms, then no.

Months like that are surprisingly rare though. You do get interludes like that but they tend not to last too long. End of May 1992 and 2018 or end of July 2013 are good examples but they didn't persist over much of a month.

Also a month which is 50% hot and sunny, 50% cool with showery NW-lies (convective activity peaking in afternoon) and clear nights might end up slightly wet but again could be seen as better than average.

Will do the remaining years now to see how it comes out (done 2010, 2013, 2018 already) based on how I feel this moment about the months (it's possible I've rated them before but these figures come to mind right now).

2010 78/120 see above

2011: Jan 6/10; Feb 3/10; Mar 8/10; Apr 9/10; May 5.5/10; June 4/10; July 4/10; Aug 4/10; Sep 5.5/10 (out of country for three weeks, looks unsettled until around the 21st); Oct 7.5/10; Nov 7/10; Dec 3.5/10 = 67/120

2012: Jan 6/10; Feb 7/10; Mar 9/10; Apr 4/10 (not as low as it could be due to bright convective days); May 6/10; Jun 2/10; Jul 4.5/10; Aug 6/10; Sep 6/10; Oct 4/10; Nov 5/10; Dec 4.5/10 = 64/120

2013 71/120 see above

2014: Jan 2/10; Feb 3/10; Mar 7/10; Apr 6/10; May 4/10; June 8/10; July 8/10; Aug 4.5/10; Sep 6/10; Oct 5/10; Nov 4/10; Dec 6/10 = 63.5/120

2015: Jan 6/10; Feb 5.5/10; Mar 6/10; Apr 8.5/10; May 5.5/10; June 8/10; July 5.5/10; Aug 4/10; Sep 7/10; Oct 7/10; Nov 3/10; Dec 2/10 = 68/120

2016: Jan 3/10; Feb 4/10; Mar 6.5/10; Apr 6/10; May 8/10; June 2/10; July 5.5/10; Aug 7/10; Sep 4.5/10; Oct 8/10; Nov 8/10; Dec 5/10  = 67.5/120

2017: Jan 6.5/10; Feb 4.5/10; Mar 5/10; Apr 8/10; May 6/10; June 6.5/10; July 4.5/10; Aug 4/10; Sep 3/10; Oct 7/10; Nov 7.5/10; Dec 6/10 = 68.5/120

2018 73.5/120 see above

2019: Jan 6/10; Feb 8/10 (I like cold but the sunshine was quite something); Mar 5.5/10; Apr 7/10; May 7/10; June (estimate) 4.5/10; July 6/10; Aug 5/10; Sep 6/10; Oct 3/10; Nov 4.5/10; Dec 3/10 = 65.5/120

Surprisingly much of a muchness but worst to best comes out at:

2014, 2012, 2019, 2011, 2016, 2015, 2017, 2013, 2018, 2010.

Just want to see how they compare with a year I perceive as good (1995) and one I perceive as bad (2024).

1995: Jan 3.5/10; Feb 3/10; Mar 8/10; Apr 8/10; May 7/10; Jun 7/10; July 8/10; Aug 9/10; Sep 4/10; Oct 8/10; Nov 4/10; Dec 8/10 = 77.5 (worse than 2010? Now that surprises me)

2024: Jan 4.5/10; Feb 2/10; Mar 3.5/10; Apr 4.5/10; May 4/10; Jun 6/10; Jul 5/10; Aug 5.5/10; Sep 4.5/10; Oct 4/10; Nov 6/10; Dec 5/10 =  54.5/120

So 2024 is indeed worse than anything in the 2010s, but 1995 coming out below 2010 is suspect. I think I need to double the marks for June, July and August because I think I weight summer months higher.

2014 coming last is also suspect to me. It had its bad points but it didn't seem the worst year of the 2010s.

Adjusting the above by doubling June, July and August marks to weight the summer higher:

2010 = 96/150

2011 = 79/150

2012 = 76.5/150

2013 = 91.5/150

2014 = 84/150

2015 = 85.5/150

2016 = 82/150

2017 = 83.5/150

2018 = 95/150

2019 = 81/150

For comparison:

1989 = 98.5/150

1990 = 97.5/150

1995 = 101.5/150

1996 = 102/150. Seems to be the highest score for all years I've lived through, due to it being the only year featuring three reasonably "wintry" winter months and three reasonably "summery" summer months plus a reasonable spring and reasonable autumn.

2002 = 79/150

2023 = 75.5/150

2024 = 71/150

This looks more realistic based on my qualitative assessment of the years. So with a summer-double-weighted score, worst to best is now:

2012, 2011, 2019, 2016, 2017, 2014, 2015, 2013, 2018, 2010.

This seems more realistic. Note how 2014 jumps from 10th to 5th due to the summer weighting!

         best

Some good winters,notably 2010,2013 and 2018 with 2013 being the best.

Worst

Too many poor summers with only 2018 being great.

 Jackmonday06 From a personal POV I find the "is a wet summer a bad one?" interesting. In theory, a definite no from me (e.g. comparing with the summers around the northern flank of the Alps, or central and northern New Zealand, which are generally wetter but sunnier than ours with a similar frequency of rain days). But in practice in the UK it tends to be yes far more often than not because of the strong inverse relationship that we generally see in summer between rainfall and sunshine and max temperatures. Sometimes we get slack cyclonic patterns with showers and thunderstorms and sunshine in between, or southerly types with warm/hot sunshine and thundery outbreaks, but it's hard to sustain them for long without either moving into a dull wet pattern with Atlantic lows streaming in, or seeing high pressure build in from the south or south-west.

Regarding the 2010s summers, I think for some western parts of the UK 2013 might well be right up there with 2018. I remember the first third of June 2013 having a lot of low cloud for much of eastern England, but being sunny and dry in the west, and July 2013 was exceptionally sunny in the west, less so in the east. However, as far as cold snowy winter weather goes, the January 2013 cold spell was dominated by easterlies, so while much of eastern England from Norfolk northwards there were 12 or 13 consecutive days of snow cover, many western areas may well have missed out for most of the spell. Similarly March 2013 was very easterly.

 SunChaserWales June was average, July was slightly wetter than average and August was significantly wetter than average (wettest since 2004). However a lot of rain was in big heavy showers with sunshine in between so didn’t feel like a wet summer.

 Jackmonday06 not at all. If the summer is warm and sunny as well I wouldn’t say it constitutes a bad summer
