Advanced Weather Alert

Category: Level 3 Warning

Weather type: Gales/Severe Gales and Heavy Rain

Affecting: England, Wales and Scotland

Date Valid For: 18:30 Wednesday 20th October - 18:00 Thursday 21st October 2004

Time Of Issue: 18.20 Wednesday 20th October 2004.

A deepening area of low pressure will track across England and Wales overnight, bringing strong winds and heavy rainfall.

Areas to the south of the depression are most likely to see the strongest winds, meaning southern England will be initially affected, then as the system moves North, the midlands, Wales and then in the early hours Northern England will be affected. During Thursday the risk transfers further north into Scotland. Gales are likely in the South of the country, but as the low pressure moves north there is a risk it may deepen further and bring severe gales to Northern England and Scotland.

As well as this rainfall totals will be very high, which coupled with the rain from previous days this week may lead to problems with flooding.

Confidence Level: 80%

Note: This alert should be considered a guide and we strongly recommend you stay tuned to the Met-Office for further warnings and updates.
