cheese I think spring 2022 was somewhat acceptable too if I remember right. May had some warm weather at least.

I remember when I was younger I hated Spring as the weather always felt spiteful: sun would be too warm for woollies and yet the wind was bitter. I was forever getting peed off walking to school with a coat and scarf and then carrying it around all day because the sun came out.

Regarding spring 2022, March 2022 was warm and exceptionally sunny for most parts of the UK (and the Republic of Ireland too, I remember Sryan over on Twitter posting about the record high sunshine totals there). April was also quite warm and sunny for most, though less so than March. This was despite a couple of northerlies at the end of March and early April, the first of which brought widespread snow showers on 31 March and 1 April. I remember May being quite warm also, but rather dull.

*Stormforce~beka* I know what you mean, the sunshine made it feel a bit March or April-esque today. Almost hard to believe it was early February.

B87  Daniel* Very location dependent. I spent a lot of time in the north, 2020 was a very poor summer. The August heatwave didn’t really reach up there and then extremely unsettled weather prevailed. July was also cold. Meanwhile 2021 was bad in the south-east but much of the rest of the country was far superior. I’d go as far as to say that overall despite the south-east being poor 2021 comes out much better. The UK summer index I made showed this.

Definitely one of the stranger summers.

raz.org.rain yes, March 2022 was sunny and warm - we reached 20C that month. April was decent with above-average sunshine and below-average rainfall, but it was only average in terms of temperatures.

May 2022 was a dull month here, with average rainfall and above-average temperatures. A strange month.

LetItSnow where abouts in the north? We exceeded 30C twice in August 2020 here, on the 11th and 12th.

cheese Carlisle. There was a 30C day on the 31st of July, then the opening days of August were very cool and quite wet, especially the 5th. Then there was a much warmer spell around the 7th to when I came back south on the 14th (which had pouring rain for much of the drive, especially the Midlands). The second half of the month was unsettled everywhere and a lot cooler. Away from the south I really wouldn't say August 2020 was one to remember. It was also quite widely duller than average.

Snowysnifflesthe older I get, the less I care about interesting or exciting weather and the more I care about weather that's nice. Don't get me wrong, I still want & enjoy thunderstorms, snow etc - but these days I care far more about having a warm, sunny spring than I do about having a cold, snowy winter.

I would say autumn is by far the most boring season in the UK btw. November is probably the single most boring month of the year - not only is there usually a lack of exciting weather but it's rarely pleasant either.

LetItSnow I can only speak for Yorkshire but the August hot spell definitely made it here. As somebody that hates late summer heat and humidity, it was pretty horrid.

A relatively poor (though not exceptional) summer beforehand though.

chris888 2018 was a Nina to Nino flip which is also something that occured in 1976 and 2006, also hot summers.

As things stand, 2025 is likely to see a Nina summer.

On the subject of warm spring to cold summer theory there's not a significant historical links so it's somewhat based from recency bias however it's a case of cause and effect.

Low AAM (so more likely to be associated with La Nina years) does lend itself to blocking near the UK in the Feb-April period and during March and April, this can translate to a position that delivers actual warmth. Meanwhile, that same -AAM pattern by summer will typically deliver a -AO and a cyclonic signal for the UK.

That is of course no guarantee of La Nina meaning a bad summer as 2022 shows.

...

As for my own spring thoughts, I suspect that March and April could be relatively cool and wet with a relatively average May.

Bring on spring. Longer evenings, garden starts to transform and some (hopefully) warmer days. I feel there are far too many people that obsess over cold weather on here than (us) milder weather chasers 😄

I can’t wait for Spring, surely this year has to be drier, warmer and sunnier than the last two springs? Surely?

That being said I generally don’t like March and it catches me out every year, it’s basically an extension of winter for most. Single digit maxes are still common, snow still likely. In fact March is probably snowier here than December.

summer blizzard Hopefully not. I'm doing the unthinkable and holidaying in the UK in early August so good weather is needed. A 2022 would be just fine!

cheese It could be an age thing tbh, I’m still quite young (though growing up quicker than I’d like) and much prefer the exciting stuff - I’m also quite indoorsy & technological, so I’m sheltered from the bad weather that people sometimes dislike.

LetItSnow I'm talking about here. Every spring month in 2020 was vastly superior to the respective 2021 months.

June 2020 was drier and sunnier than June 2021 (though still on the wet and dull side), with both months having an average high of 22.5c. June 2020 wins this.

July 2020 was drier than July 2021, with both months having equal sunshine hours. July 2021 was warmer with more stable temperatures. This one is a draw.

August 2020 was a very warm, wet and dull month, but there is no contest here. August 2021 was very cool and exceptionally dull (only August 1958 was duller). Though August 2021 was slightly drier than average, that isn't enough to stop it from being one of the worst Augusts on record. August 2020 wins this convincingly while being wet and dull, 2021 was that bad.

A Face like Thunder I would've preferred it. Lived in a flat with very little natural light and no garden. If it had been cold and wet I wouldn't have spent so much time longing to be outside.

B87 Ah, it was not clear. For the south 2020 was better, I don't disagree.

Spring 2020 is sunnier for the UK than all but a handful of summers, iconic season.

LetItSnow  LetItSnow 2020 was also a sunny year, with 1764 hours, 90 more than average.

2021 was Heathrow's dullest year on record, just into the 1300s.
