Weather Alert

Category: Level 2 Warning

Weather type: Heavy Rain, Heavy Snow and Blizzards, Gales.

Affecting: All parts of the UK, but especially northern and western Scotland

Date Valid For: 11:30 Saturday 01st January - 23:59 Sunday 02nd January 2005

Time Of Issue: 11.20 Saturday 01st January 2005.

A band of heavy rain and strong to gale force winds will sweep eastwards across the UK during New Years Day, clearing the southeast by late evening.

Gale force northwesterly winds will drive showers into the north and west behind this rain band, and as it turns colder these showers will turn increasingly to snow over Scotland and the hills in Northern Ireland and Northwest England. Up to 10cm of snow may fall in exposed areas above 200m in Northern Ireland and Northwest England, but the Scottish Highlands may see up to 20cm of snowfall.

With winds expected to gust up to 65MPH, blizzards are likely at times in northern and western Scotland, and any lying snow will drift.

With the snow comes the risk of distruption to travel services and hill walkers in these areas are advised not to go out, but if they must they should take extreme care.

The showers will turn more to rain later on Sunday as it turns milder again.

Expect further updates as and when is necessary.

Confidence Level: 70%

Note: This alert should be considered a guide and we strongly recommend you stay tuned to the Met-Office for further warnings and updates.
