Weather Alert

Category: Level 2 Warning

Weather type: Heavy Rain and Severe Gales.

Affecting: Scotland, Northern Ireland, Northern England and Wales.

Time and Date Valid For: 12:00 noon Thursday 06th January - 12:00 noon Saturday 08th January 2005

Time Of Issue: 22.45 Wednesday 05th January 2005.

A very wet and windy spell of weather lies ahead during the above period as strong to gale force southwesterly winds bring in a active frontal system from off the Atlantic.

This front is expected to be rather slow moving as it gradually edges southeastwards across the UK over the next 48/60 hours. Indeed, a wave is expected to develop along this front on Friday night, slowing it down further and bringing a spell of heavier rain to central and northern parts of Britain.

Higher areas of Western Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales and Northwest England could see rainfall totals of up to 75mm (3 inches) in this period, which would be enough to bring the risk of localised flooding.

In association with this, strong to gale force southwesterly winds are to be expected, with severe gales likely around exposed western coasts and hills. Gusts of wind may reach as high as 70MPH at times, which would be enough to bring the risk of distruption to transport, structural damage and trees falling.

Please take extra care if you have to venture out.

Expect further updates as and when is necessary.

Further very unsettled weather is expected into next week.

Confidence Level: 70%

Note: This alert should be considered a guide and we strongly recommend you stay tuned to the Met-Office for further warnings and updates.
