for sunny donny

Avge min=3.4C absolute min=-2.5C on 22nd

Avge max=8.8C; absolute max=14.2C 10th; and the lowest max=3.6C on24th

Mean temp = 6.1C

Days of 2mm rain or more = 17

Days with snow/sleet=3

Number of air frosts=4

Number of ground frosts=12

No days with fog or thunder.

The second warmest since 1997 when I started keeping records. Looking at the longer term for this area, Finningley, then the following years had a higher mean temp than this year:

1975=6.3C; 1983=6.5C; 1989=6.2C and 1990=6.3C.

So it seems it could be the 8th or 9th warmest January in this area over the past 60 or so years.

Snow lying at 0900: 0 days

Dry Days: 10 (lots of drizzle all month)

All in all, an absolutely TERRIBLE month, I didnt get my rainfall meter working until mid-month, but although it was drizzling often, it made a meagre 21mm in about 15 days.

However, the main thing this month will be remembered for is the total lack of ANY snow and the high minimum temperature extremes.

Heres hoping February is somewhat better, as with a temp of 5.9°C, January 2005 is the warmest here since 1990.

This months figures, with 04 figures in brackets.

Average Max 8.4ºC (6.9ºC) +1.5ºC

Average Min 3.0ºC (2.2ºC) +0.8ºC

Absolute Max 13.4ºC (12.4ºC) +1.0C

Absolute Min -1.4ºC (-6.0ºC) +4.6ºC

Air frosts 3 (6) -3

Snow lying at 0900 3 ( :o -5

Rainfall 27mm (67mm) -40mm

And to think that LAST January was about 1.3ºC above the 30 year Durham mean, what does that make THIS January? B)

Another thing, the 3rd consecutive very dry month (Nov 13mm, Dec 25mm, Jan 27mm)

And Poor Ozzie, TEN times my rainfall is mindboggling, he's so close that I can throw a cricket ball from my house to his house.

Well, actually I couldn't, theres a couple of hills in the way (He's on the wet side)

In fact, it looks like much of the UK has had a warmer January than we have had in Ningbo this year. I'm still trying to find some stats about the past month's weather here but my guess is that the mean temperature for the month has been below average.

It's probably not that unusual for the UK to have a warmer January than this part of China (a warmer July would be a different matter!) because the winter temperatures here are surprisingly low for someone from balmy northwest Europe. These are the 1961-90 (January) means for Shanghai.

Mean maximum temperature 7.7C

Mean minimum temperature 0.5 C

Mean temperature 3.7 C

Something to consider maybe if your mean maximum was higher than 7.7C.
