0815rs Tuesday 1/3/05

Overcast although reasonably bright with light snow showers.

Yesterday's high temperature reached a balmy 1C with continued light snow fluries mainly towards the evening. Snow lying in shelterd places and in shadow has not thawed, but cloud cover helped keep overnight minimum at -1.5C. Ice is once again a problem this morning with any falling snow freezing as it reaches the cold ground.

Total snow accumulation for the winter is about 23.0cm with snow at some point on each of nine consecutive days at the end of February and 12 days in total for the whole winter period.

Rainfall for February is well below average at 25.1mm with an avearge temperature of 3.7C and 0.9C dewpoint, and 15 days of northerly wind direction.

Weather for today is complicated by a number of low pressure centres sitting over the UK and Scandinavia. These will track south over the next 48hrs and as they do so, will pull cold continental air - originating in the arctic - over the UK. This air will circulate over both the North Sea and immediate Atlantic, picking up moisture as it does so and depositing precipitation overland. The warmer Atlantic will heat the air somewhat and so western flanks of the UK will see mainly rain. Eastern coastal areas and higher ground may see snow for a time especially towards this evening, but any snow will most likely give way to rain as warmer air percolates through the colder more established air of the past few days.

Temperatures will steadily rise through the morning with a more rapid thaw of any remaining snow.

Expected high of 4C, feeling like 2C with windchill this afternoon.

-0.3C (min -0.8C @05:58) windchill -0.3C

0kts SSW (10 minute average); gusting 6kts (1 minute average over last hour); max gust 8kts @ 01:53

0.0mm/hr last hour; max 0.0mm/min over last 12hrs; total 0.00mm/12hrs

1005.9hPa msl corrected, trend falling, -0.3hPa/hr

Intermittant light snow here for most of the night but with the temp' fractionally above 0c it amounted to only another 2cm.

Much more than this about 20-30 miles NW of here, 3 major roads closed in north Derbyshire. Looking at the radar run for the last few hours would estimate 7-10cm of fresh snow above about 400mts in that area.

Temp' at 0900 0.3c

Min' lat night 0.0c

Rainfall from 1800 yesterday ( melted snow) 1.6mm

Mean wind speed at 0900 12 mph SW, gusting to 15

8 oktas stratus and nimbostratus

Continuous light snow falling

A strange day so far:

This morning, left derbyshire at 05.30 @ 2oC. This was rain.

All down the M1 (Leicestershire to Northamtonshire) the temp fluctuated between 1-2.5oC.

At North Luton on M1, temp was between 0.5oC and 1.5oC with snow fall. The snow then continued from here down to the M25 jntn. Between M25/M1 Jntn to Erith (Kent), it was a mixture of sleet and snow, and occasional rain.

On the way back, temperatures were generally between 5-6.5oC, with mostly sunny conditions. Lovely.

Well i'm here to report that I have just seen a rain shower pass me by. Yes thats right. rain apart from last Saturday thats the first time I have seen rain since the 20th of Feb before this cold snap arrived. Winds are coming in from the SW (also the first time in ages) and the temperature has dropped from 7c to 5c which is a bit milder of late but still quite cool.

All the snow had melted apart from by six foot tall snowman! It will take more than a rainshower to melt this beauty!

An odd day here too. Sleet and wet snow around 6am, then sunshine, then hail and sleet, then sunshine, then sleet. Now it's clouding-up from the northwest and the NE wind has backed W or NW...Something interesting lies upwind, methinks?? ;):):)
