Monthly Report for May 2005 at Pollard's Hill Weather Station, Surrey

It was the driest May in Pollards Hill history (However, If I'd been here in 1989 that particular May I very much suspect would have been drier)

I also registered my hottest May maximum temperature ever on the 27th. The warm weather came too late to prevent temperatures over the 31 days being a little down on May's average.

The month started off mild with maximums of 22.0°C and 22.3°C reached on the 1st and 2nd. It then turned cooler, reaching only 11.6°C in a strong northerly wind on the 4th. The cool spell continued well into the 2nd and 3rd weeks of the month, but saw some pleasant sunshine despite struggling temperatures. There were a few wintry showers on the 16th as northerly winds brought Arctic air and a maxima of only 11.6°C along with some damaging ground frosts. From the 18th it turned warmer; everyday from the 18th - 31st had a maxima above 17.3°C, reaching above 20°C on the 5 days from the 24th to 28th. There was also much more cloud and rain around than earlier in the month.

With a final average temperature of 12.1°C, May 2005 is above average. In fact, May 2004 was slightly cooler (12.0°C). The trend for cooler minimum temperatures seem to continue, with May 2005's average minimum temperature well over a degree below May 2004.

Most of the time the weather was sunny and pleasantly warm. However, when rain fell, it fell in very large quantities resulting in a very high May rainfall total.

    11th > 15th

There were intermittent periods of high and low pressure but the weather was mostly dry and sunny with pleasant long spells of sunshine. The 15th saw a taste of ealry summer with 20.5C reached in the shade.

There'll be exceptionally warm temperatures for the time of year affecting much of western Europe during the coming days, but that warmth will only graze the UK for now. Next weekend may see a more direct hit with the potential for southerly winds to draw some of that heat north and take temperatures into the mid or high-twenties. Read the full update here
