    A month of two halves. The first half of the month saw 10 out of 15 wet days with winds predominantly from the north and west. This meant temperatures overall were below average including some quite cold temperatures at night (4.4°C on the 7th), along with above average amounts of rainfall.

    The second half of the month saw a more southerly flow to the weather, giving 8 straight days of dry and sunny weather, as well as some very hot temperatures. It was a record 30.1°C on the 23rd and the period from the 16th to the 24th was the best summer spell since August 2003.

    The end of the month was a little cooler, but still above average ensuring that June 2005 is a massive 2.0°C above the 1971-2000 average. Incidently however, it follows the trend of many 2005 months owing its high average to high maximum temperatures, not high minima. In fact, it is the coolest June minima I have on my records.

    Morning everyone, here is my report for June.

    Burton upon Trent, Midlands.

    Northern high pressure blocking was the most dominant feature for the first two weeks in to June, the weather was rather mixed with below normal temperatures and I even recorded a couple of ground frosts during this period.

    The mean temperature here for the first half of June was –0.5c below the average. Apart from 5mm of rain right at the beginning of the month, this period was also very dry, with 10 straight days with out any rain. Although dry there was also a good deal of cloud at times, but there was a couple of very pleasant interludes when high pressure edged closer to the UK.

    Around the 16th for the first time this summer the Azores high began to extend its influence towards the UK. Temperatures responded very rapidly, and it became very hot at times in Burton, with 32c being recorded on the 19th and 30c on the 23rd. With all this hot weather the inevitable happened. As the Azores high gave ground and shifted west, hot humid air associated with low pressure over France and Spain edged closer, this gave rise to some spectacular thunderstorms on the 19th and the 24th, with the first of the storm producing some impressive hail deposits in parts of Burton, although typically with showers, where I live only about 1.5 miles out of town, I recorded no rain at all.

    High pressure again took control from the 26th, but the centre was a little further north this time, so temperature were a little lower, though IMO more pleasant, but when the breakdown occurred it did not inhibit the development of more severe storms which lit the sky with some spectacular displays of lightening here on the evenings of the 28th / 29th. Finally the last day was quieter, bright and pleasant with a little sunshine.

    June turned out to be the wettest month of the year so far, with virtually all of the rain being produced from the above-mentioned thunderstorms at the end of the month.

    Maximum Temperature for the Month = 32c on the 19th

    Minimum Temperature for the Month = 2c on the 7th

    Average Maximum = 20.2

    Average Minimum = 10.6c

    Mean = 15.4c, 1.3c above average.

    Coldest day on the 12th = 12.6c

    Warmest Night on the 19th = 17.4c

    Rainfall total = 43.65mm

    My june was a nice month generally. I remember the first few days were slightly unsettled with rain at times before an improving picture and rather sunny and hot picture from about the 7th until the 23rd june. here are my results for each day that i recorded:

    In the whole month of June, 4 of the 30 days were rain non-stop, mostly at the start of the month and towards the end, i also had 1 drizzly day, which justs gets you really wet. Amazingly, 15 of the 30 days, thats half of june was full of sunshine, and with only 8 cloudy days. Towards the end of june i also recorded 3 thunderstorms, all of which were quite intense, the first, on the 24th June lasted for over 4 hours and i managed to count about 270 lightning flashes with thunder in excess of 150. The 2nd storm, which was the best thunder i have heard since i was born, ripped through poole the following day and having counted over 30 lightning flashes, along with a downpour of hail and a lot of earth splitting thunder. There was no sleet or snow during the month and no frost whatsoever. The temperatures were generally very high with 10 of the 30 days of june recording temperatures between 15 and 20c, these tempeeature mostly associated with the cloud and rain. 9 days of the 30, temperatures hit in excess of 21c that 70f and were below 25c, with another 10 days of very hot weather with temperatures beetween 25c and 29c, these mostly with the heatwave. I didnt record 30c or more, although london managed 33c and my highest temperature of 29c. I had 1 hail storm throughout the month with no tornadoes or funnel clouds seen. So overall, the month was a very warm one, with rainfall well below average, and sunshine and temperatures well above average. Unfortunately, july hasnt started too great. How was your june then? cool.gif wink.gif

    Some perverse stats from this June :lol: .

    It was the coolest overall of the 3 Junes I have recorded temps, however I did record the highest June temp of the 3 years on the 19th!! However I also recorded the lowest temp of those 3 years with a min of 3c on the 13th . And the min early on the 19th had been 19c, the highest min in the 3 Junes :D

    Average max = 20.63c (highest 31c on the 19th)

    Average min = 11.13c (lowest = 3c on the 13th)

    Mean = 15.88 (1.02c cooler than 2004)

    Dry days = 17

    Rain days = 13

    Rainfall = 82mm

    This June also works out as quite a month of 2 halves!

    The 1st 15 days mean was 13.56c.

    The last 15 days mean was 18.49c.

    I won't bore you with the max/min averages per each half :D

    Just been taking a look at the METO average CET, and I will be interested to see what their June CET comes out as.

    May, over the last 20 years, was one of the coldest, yet, June could be one of, quite probably in the top 3 of, hotest Junes on record.

    What a topsy turvery year so far.

    After a dull and cool start with intermittent rain and showers it was a sunny month alternating with thundery showers.

    1st > 6th

    Low cloud dominatged for the first few days. It cleared with a gale on the 4th before spells of light rain and drizzle occurred.

    7th > 14th

    Most of the time, it was sunny and warm with the highest temperature recorded on the 9th at 26.5C. The weekend cooled with more cloud and the following trio of days were cool with bright sunny intervals at times.

    15th > 16th

    A cold front brought heavy rain then dry conditions on the 15th followed by a warm front on the 16th bringing long periods of lught drizzle.

    17th > 23rd

    This was the hottest period of the month. After a cloudy start on the 17th 31.5C was the high recorded on the 19th with a humidity level of 93%. It stayed dry, sunny and warm into the new week and once became hot and humid again during the 23rd with an avergae of 28C.

    24th > 25th

    A cooler airflow from the southwest brought a clutch of very active thunderstorms during the 24th resulting in 22.5mm of rain then a dull and cloudy day followed.

    26th > 30th

    The first three days of this period were dry and sunny with temperatures on the rise. The sun was very pleasant and strong to sit in. After a hot start to the 28th the evening brought some of the most torrential thunderstorms and impressive lightning and thunder in my entire 13 years of life. Sheets of rain fell. There were further patchy light showers during the 29th before it became cooler adn cloudier to close the month.
