I think it will fall short of a cat 5, I think a Strong Cat 4

With Kane, Cat 4, might just edge Cat 5 60-70 miles offshore.

Should be quite a show from above, but the ground view will be one of pure destruction, and the crazy Yank TV crews will be broadcasting for our perverse online pleasure.

122mph

To convert knots into MPH:

Knots x 1.15 = MPH

Katrina Cuts Oil Output by a Third

U.S. energy companies said U.S. Gulf of Mexico crude oil output was cut by more than one-third on Saturday as Hurricane Katrina appeared poised to charge through central production areas toward New Orleans.

The Gulf of Mexico is home to roughly a quarter of U.S. domestic oil and gas output, with a capacity to produce about 1.5 million barrels per day of crude and 12.3 billion cubic feet per day of gas.

The New Orleans mayor is being inverviewed now on WDSU and is saying they will look at a way of evacuating everyone in the morning. He wants it to be mandatory.

Seems Katrina is an annular hurricane. Google explains :(

Annular hurricanes are generally hurricanes that have the ability to maintain their intensity for longer periods than normal hurricanes without undergoing an eyewall replacement cycle, or weakening in any other way. It's suspected that most category five hurricanes are considered Annular hurricanes which explains why they are so rare. :(

Woah, look at the eye on that thing!

20.jpg

I have never seen a hurricane with such a big eye! I mean last night when I went to bed it was very hard to see any eye at all.

Will that hamper it's development?

Eye's show stability, so she's extremely organised at the moment.

Cat 5 very soon....

Another fact to note, the hurricane eye is fairly central, and the storm very even around it, moisture is being added evenly and constantly.

Oh,well this could be very bad news, looks like it could be going Annular, read my tutorial to learn more about these features, nonetheless if it is one, expect a upgrade to cat-5 very shortly, could well reach 165mph I suspect.

a large eye could allow to wrap even more and its a monster in terms of size thanks to the GOM allowing it to just explode in terms of size,it's certainly not going to weaken with SSt's of 31C upwards, nearly PERFECT atmopsheric condtions,I think this could be the strongest of the decade so far.

I think this is going to even more of a monster then Andrew was, anyone think $200 billion dollars worth of damage possible???

whatever happens, this is what is known as the doomsday event for NO.

Camille anyone???????

(ps,recon found pressure down to 915mbs,probably borderline cat-5 now actually....)

On the last sat pic, one that Kane posted, could you get a more perfect example of a fully formed and symmetric hurricane? Thats text book stuff.

This will equal, or be bigger than Andrew I fear.

I aint far out at the moment on landfall prediction, about 40 or 50 miles west of current NOAA predictions.

All I can say is, blessings and thoughts to wherever this makes landfall.

Anyone know of live 'cams? Panoramic etc?

(btw, the BBC really should be updating there news about this! Typical of them, always behind on major stories - there website is still showing yesterday's news about Katrina - which is well wrong and out of date)
