The area that is flooding in New Orleans is a destroyed area anyway, on FOX they said all buildings in the area have to be rebuilt, as such, its not going to make much difference just take a little longer to reclaim again.

Statement as of 10:00 am CDT on September 23, 2005

...Rita a little weaker...still a very dangerous hurricane...

a Hurricane Warning is in effect from Port O'Connor Texas to Morgan

City Louisiana. A Hurricane Warning means that hurricane conditions

are expected within the warning area within the next 24 hours.

Preparations to protect life and property should be rushed to

completion.

At 10 am CDT...1500z...the Tropical Storm Warning south of Port

Aransas has been discontinued.

A Tropical Storm Warning remains in effect for the southeastern

coast of Louisiana east of Morgan City to the mouth of the Pearl

River including metropolitan New Orleans and Lake Pontchartrain

...And from south of Port O'Connor to Port Aransas. A Tropical

Storm Warning means that tropical storm conditions are expected

within the warning area within the next 24 hours.

For storm information specific to your area...including possible

inland watches and warnings...please monitor products issued

by your local weather office.

At 10 am CDT...1500z...the center of Hurricane Rita was located near

latitude 27.4 north...longitude 91.9 west or about 220 miles

southeast of Galveston Texas and about 210 miles southeast of

Port Arthur Texas.

Rita is moving toward the northwest near 10 mph and this motion is

expected to continue during the next 24 hours. On this track...the

core of Rita will make landfall near the southwest Louisiana and

Upper Texas coasts early Saturday.

Maximum sustained winds have decreased to near 135 mph with higher

gusts. Rita is at the border of category four and three hurricane

on the Saffir-Simpson scale. Slight weakening is possible before

landfall...but Rita is expected to come ashore as a major

hurricane.

Hurricane force winds extend outward up to 85 miles from the

center...and tropical storm force winds extend outward up

to 205 miles.

Latest minimum central pressure reported by an Air Force

reconnaissance plane was 929 mb...27.43 inches.

Coastal storm surge flooding of 15 feet above normal tide levels...

locally up to 20 feet at head of bays and nearby rivers...with

large and dangerous battering waves...can be expected near and to

the east of where the center makes landfall. Tides are currently

running about 2 feet above normal along the Louisiana...Mississippi

and Alabama coasts in the areas affected by Katrina. Tides in those

areas will increase to 3 to 5 feet and be accompanied by large

waves...and residents there could experience coastal flooding.

Large swells generated by Rita will likely affect most portions of

the Gulf Coast.

Rita is expected to produce rainfall accumulations of 8 to 12

inches...with isolated maximum amounts of 20 inches over

southeastern Texas and southwestern Louisiana as it moves inland.

Rainfall amounts of 3 to 5 inches are possible over southeastern

Louisiana including metropolitan New Orleans with isolated heavier

amounts possible. Since Rita is forecast to slow down significantly

after making landfall...total accumulations in excess of 25 inches

are possible over the next several days across eastern Texas into

western Louisiana.

Isolated tornadoes are possible today over portions of southeastern

Texas...southern Louisiana including southern Mississippi and

Alabama

repeating the 10 am CDT position...27.4 N... 91.9 W. Movement

toward...northwest near 10 mph. Maximum sustained winds...135 mph.

Minimum central pressure... 929 mb.

An intermediate advisory will be issued by the National Hurricane

Center at 1 PM CDT followed by the next complete advisory at 4 PM

CDT.

I would think any delay caused would be major news for all the poor residents waiting to get back. The storm is still a fair way out too, so there is the possibility of more breaches, more flooding and the whole drainage and repair process going back to square one.

oh dear, i thought that would happen. i mean the storm surge was a hit or miss but with all the water in that region and the rivers and such it was really only a matter of time until the 15 inches of rainfall collected together in the various channels and breached the barriers.

i wonder how much more that city can take.

What's happened to all the ships and rigs that were under this thing?

Well, there's not much wrong with eye in the latest vis and IR sat images.

But that's to my untrained eye, I know!

Don't panic, Mr Mondairing!

There's still such a long way to go. I'm thinking that the eye won't make landfall until late Sat morning, our time. The warm sst's will keep her strong till then. Strong cat 3 at least.

I'm very glad they gave themselves (the evacuee's) the extra day to leave or many could have faced Rita in their cars stuck on the interstate.

Again, a lesson learnt. They will more than likely take example from Tsunami affected areas and just have 'ways out' and not try to move such fantastic numbers of people up just half a highway. Hindsight eh? can't beat it!!!

Yes John posted this morning, certainly is horrific. This system is qobbling uite badly as the eye dynamics are constantly changes.New Orleans flooding again isn't that suprising sadly as the area is seeing the outerbands of Rita itslef, heavy feeder band just to the north of New Orelans, probably that band caused the break in the Leeve,6 inches of rain has flalen over the alst 6hrs from the intense feeder bands, could be another 2-3 inches yet and so more flooding in the city is possible.

System pressure does seem to be rising still and I can't see it getting any stronger now as it is entering a area of lower Oceanic heat content.Still at the least should be a 120mph hurricane with a larger surge.

Apparently the levee is still intact. The water has risen above the level of the repair.

They were expecting a storm surge of between 2-5 feet by tomorrow. The surge is already at 6 feet.

Looks to me if Rita is better organised again http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/PS/TROP/DATA/RT/float-vis-loop.html

Some of that cloud earlier around the eye has cleared and although the eye looks covered over, the last 2 frames of this loop make her look a bit more dynamic again.

Hang on a sec. The Lake Charles radar loop now has Rita heading due north, at least 350 degrees. Anyone agree? http://radar.weather.gov/radar/loop/DS.p20-r/si.klch.shtml :blink:Nowhere near Galveston.

You're not wrong Mondy. Could just be the latest wobble (short time frame on that loop), but if it isn't....

...Galveston will have to make do with a storm surge, cos they won't get much rain or wind! :)

That's just great.

8 feet of water, and because of a tornado you are told to seek shelter in the lowest floor of the building.

Talk about a no win situation :)
