Excellent post Mr D.

It just goes to show that, no matter how much you look at the charts, surprises can sometimes be around the corner (also encouraging that this happened even upto 97).

One thing I notice about those easterlies is that not all of them were very snowy- some of them were, but others were not.

The easterly in December 1997, at least where I lived in Tyneside, produced nothing but layers of stratocumulus, 5C, and drizzle, while that of 1947 was exceptionally snowy.

That's a post to give hope where all hope is gone, Mr D.

It must have taken some time to trawl through the charts to find the relevant examples; I know, because I'm always looking through back issues of the DWR and the net-weather archive charts and it's a time consuming business.

Perhaps you have a database where you can type in 'unexpected easterlies', if so, I wish I had one.

You never should. Winter in my books is a wonderful season. It's jammed packed full of everything. Thunderstorms, gales, dull gloomy days, frost, snow - everything as far as clear blue skies. Roll on more winter weather I say. :o

I'm kicking myself now for not mentioning why I originally posted this thread and that was because I had a gut feeling this was going to happen. There was something in the charts that told me an easterly was around the corner, it just felt as if this was going to happen. :)

Hi Mr Data,

You would not have been posting as such if you thought it would not happen :)

A number of us cold lovers have beeen talking about likelyhood of this for many months,

It looks like it is going to come to pass.

Regards,

John

One I remember well from a few years back

Rrea00119940209.gif

Rrea00119940214.gif

The first proper snow for 3 years from that one

And another I remember well:

Rrea00120021128.gif

Rrea00120021208.gif

which takes some beating as letdowns go- barely a frost let alone snow from that.

Some much needed prozac

I've got some Times articles on this easterly and I'll post them nearer the time but here's December 1938. The first half was mild and at times very mild

Old links (from 2005)

The first easterly mentioned:

http://www.wetterzentrale.de/archive/ra/19...00119971215.gif

http://www.wetterzentrale.de/archive/ra/19...00219971215.gif

You can choose the date you want as the format on that site is quite simple /ra/yyyy/Rrea001yyyymmdd.gif

00 is the run and the number after that is the chart type.

Well- as in December 2005, your evident hunches were spot on, although the build up to this easterly has been very slow, so perhaps not such a good example of a "where did that come from" easterly.
