For this, I have used the METO CET. I was going to do Dec/Jan figures, but as Jan 06 data isnt available on the website (although if someone can show me, i'll do another comparison), I thought i'd look at the Nov/Dec figures (i.e. end of Autumn/beginning of Winter).

The below figures are based upon the average of November and December CET's (in oC):

    2005 - 5.30

    2004 - 6.55

    2003 - 6.45

    2002 - 7.10

    2001 - 5.55

    2000 - 6.40

    1999 - 6.45

    1998 - 5.85

    1997 - 7.10

    1996 - 4.40

    1995 - 5.00

    1994 - 8.25

    1993 - 5.05

    1992 - 5.50

    1991 - 5.75

In the last 15 years, only 3 years had a colder end to Autumn and start to winter. In fact, in the last 25 years, only 4 years were colder (1985 in the previous 10 years).

Also, i've reviewed the combined CET of Nov/Dec for 05 compared to the previous 15 years.

    15 year CET for Nov/Dec = 6.047oC

    2005 CET for Nov/Dec = 5.3oC

So below average for the last 15 years (and 25 years, and probably also for the last 30 years).

    November CET for 15 years = 7.33oC

2005 November = 6.2oC (quite signifcantly below average for 15 years)

    December CET for 15 years = 4.76oC

2005 December = 4.4oC (still below average. Only 4 Decembers in the last 15 years were colder than 2005)

I would say by these, this winter certainly started differently, and the end of autumn certainly helped the above figures. However, December was certainly colder than usual as well.
