Interesting article on spring up here - it reckons we're about 2 weeks behind normal:

Daffs are now fully out and snowdrops have gone over. Hiyacinths are now in bloom, and forsythia is beginning to flower. There is also frog spawn in the pond. No blossom on trees as yet though.

Well the daffs and crocuses are only just starting to come out and the squirrells are bonking like rabbits ! Saturday I could have sworn I heard swallows (or swifts) which seems very early for them.

At long last I can finally feel spring in the air. Roll on summer

Wall-to-wall with daffodils here.

Guess what flowers the kids will give on Mother's Day? :)

Was Mother's Day timed to match the daffs or is it the other way round? :)

Natures really playing 'catchup' this year. All of a sudden (in a matter of days) all the bulbs have flowered Snowdrops, Daffs, Crocus the tulips are coming on apace (and so to the Frittilaria) and the green from the Blue bells has put on a least 2"'s in the same time. Looks like this spring, though late, will be colourful!!!

P.S. I could smell the soil the other night for the first time this year!!!

barn owls

the increase in barn owls may be due to the breed release program thar took place a few years ago ,i think it was country wide but in this area we have atleast 3 pairs working all the hedge rows and field margins.

another controbution is the change in farming practice which pays farmers to leave grass areas around fields for the owls and other species to hunt thier food

very nice to see good numbers around

as for johns picture

TOAD IN THE HOLE !!

saw ladybirds about 3 days ago along with lots of frog spawn, blackbirds collecting for nesting, and today the first bumble bee and butterfly - no expert but not white, reds and blacks mainly!

Hi John,

your butterflies would most likely have been peacocks or small tortoiseshells, possibly a comma.

yes it’s been a great day to be out, mowed the lawns while the sun was out this afternoon, I too saw two peacock butterflies, one lady-bird and about twenty frogs + loads of spawn, after I had finished garding, a huge cumulonimbus cloud gathered and we had a short downpour.

I've spotted a couple of bees (don't know which sort), a ladybird, two toads and a bloomin' fly flew into my kitchen the other day. Oh, and a moth last night.....are these "seasonal" insects? I can't recall having seen any moths during the Winter.

The heavy rain that we've had over the past few days has also brought out the worms.....hadn't seen any worms for ages.

There is a rookery in some old high trees near us and the rooks are well into building their nests, and if the old saying means anything, the nests are pretty high in the branches, - so they must think it's going to be a good summer.

Sparrows are again raiding the coir from some of last year's hanging baskets, going off with good beak-fulls for nest building.

(It must also be time to divide the snowdrops before they stop flowering)

Dubai Floods: Another Warning Sign for Desert Regions?

The flooding in the Middle East desert city of Dubai earlier in the week followed record-breaking rainfall. It doesn't rain very often here like other desert areas, but like the deadly floods in Libya last year showed, these rain events are likely becoming more extreme due to global warming.
