Yep - the house martins have arrived in force. ;)

Thought that I saw some about a week ago but it was a fleeting sighting and it's only today that they have shown themselves - dozens of them checking out their old nest sites.

Cuckoos have been scarce until earlier this week when a walk into the woods near us revealed two cuckoos shouting at each other.

Spring has sprung! ;)

Everything has leaves on here except Ash, Oak and Beech, this is normal as Beech doesn't usually come into leaf until 2nd week of may here and the oak just after that, but the ashes are usually in leaf here by now. The apple tree is only just coming into blossom, very much behind schedule.

Well I dont know what it is, but every morning there are a couple of birds talking to each other. Sounds nice at first, but more like chinese torchure after a couple of minutes.

Also, most trees out the back are in leaf now, grass is growing at a regular rate, and i've noticed a few green winged midget fly things around (which we got all through last summer).

The ground also seems to be the driest it has been since spring started.

What seems odd is that a large proportion of the trees around here are still bare, when usually they would at least show signs of new growth by now?

That is odd Andy, Ashes, Oaks and Beeches are still bare here, you don't have a large portion of these in your area do you?

Here in Brixton I saw a rose flowering (sheltered but clearly not leftover form last year judging by the new growth). In my garden the Gloire de Dijon rose has flower buds and the greensepals are coming away from the bud: hope to have a flower out in a week. This is rather late for me: my earliest was last week in March in I would guess 1995. Generally I hope to have it in flower by late April.

Regards

ACB

I have been in the woods almost every weekend since just before Xmas and it has been great to see the seasons change. Spring was late coming this year (well it came at more at a time that it would be expected). I tapped Birch sap during the third and fourth week of March a whole two weeks later than last year. there has been a wonderful show of Primrose and cheery blossom this year and i think there is going to be a great show of bluebells which have just starting to show now.

Hazel sap has started to rise making it more pliable for working

cheery blossom

A meaningful typo there Adi, cherry blossom is indeed cheery :( .

Three large Sycamores near my house, one is fully leafed and the other two are only budding - exactly the same as last year but a month (ish) later.

Just seen a couple of swifts for the first time this year. Usually the last migrant to arrive and the first to leave.

Their screeching calls always remind be of balmy summer evenings. :)

Speaking of ashes and oaks..................what about the old saw..........

"Oak before Ash, in for a splash. Ash before Oak, in for a soak."

There are several oaks around here that are now in fairly full leaf. The ash in my mother's garden in Bridport is still bare.

Hmmmm?

Yes, I remember that saying. I brought it up last year as last year the oak came out before the ash (which doesn't usually happen) and then the summer turned out dry, so the lore was true for last year! :)

The oaks have just begun leafing up here aswell, aswell as the beech now, but, as you said, the ashes are still bare. So if you were to believe the old weather lore, we're in for a dry summer.

I might have known someone would have brought it up before - sorry - missed your post.

One of those old sayings that must surely have some truth.

PS

Baby sparrows are cheeping in their nest under my eaves tonight. Tuted off with the cold, I suggest! :D

Well, the post was a year ago :D no need to apologise.

Weather lore must have an element of truth in it, they're based on observations of past peoples before weather forecasting was around after all.

And 'my' Swifts have just arrived too - bless them :-)

They're screeching round and having a look under the roof tiles,

but the starlings have to finish their nests there first !

As others have said, such a wonderful sound of Summer (to come)

Cheers,

Beverley Lass

The Mayflies have hatched. Loads of them were flying around last Saturday and Sunday bringing a welcome feast to the birds and the trout on the nearby lake.
