Tropical Cyclone Larry

Recommended Posts

Yep I'm in Australia, luckily I'm in Melbourne enjoying good weather and the Commonwealth games.

Found the following definitions on the BOM website. Larry is closer to 5 than I thought.

CATEGORY 1

Negligible house damage. Damage to some crops, trees and caravans. Craft may drag moorings.

A Category 1 cyclone's stongest winds are GALES with gusts to 125 km/h.

These winds correspond to Beaufort 8 and 9 (Gales and strong gales).

CATEGORY 2

Minor house damage. Significant damage to signs, trees and caravans. Heavy damage to some crops. Risk of power failure. Small craft may break moorings.

A Category 2 cyclone's strongest winds are DESTRUCTIVE winds with gusts of 125 -170 km/h.

These winds correspond to Beaufort 10 and 11 (Storm and violent storm).

CATEGORY 3

Some roof and structural damage. Some caravans destroyed. Power failures likely.

A Category 3 cyclone's strongest winds are VERY DESTRUCTIVE winds with gusts of 170 - 225 km/h.

These winds correspond to the highest category on the Beaufort scale, Beaufort 12 (Hurricane).

CATEGORY 4

Significant roofing loss and structural damage. Many caravans destroyed and blown away. Dangerous airborne debris. Widespread power failures.

A Category 4 cyclone's strongest winds are VERY DESTRUCTIVE winds with gusts of 225 - 280 km/h.

These winds correspond to the highest category on the Beaufort scale, Beaufort 12 (Hurricane).

CATEGORY 5

Extremely dangerous with widespread destruction.

A Category 5 cyclone's strongest winds are VERY DESTRUCTIVE winds with gusts of more than 280 km/h.

Extremely impressive system this one, that satilite image Wolves posted shows its a very well organised system with a great looking eye and a classic shape to it as well with a fairly small eye, though IR and other sat images suggests that the northern side is the strongest side as is expected with the system moving in the general direction it is presently. Strength at the mo ment is rather uncertain but satilite estimates suggests its upto 115kts at present!

Expect Innlsfail to be hit very hard indeed by this system, and also just look whats coming up behind it....

Name: Larry

Severity Category: 5

Situation At: 5:30AM EST Monday 20 March 2006

Warning Area: Cape Tribulation to Bowen, extending inland to near Normanton

Watch Area: The southeast coast of the Gulf of Carpentaria - Burketown to Gilbert River Mouth

Location: 17.5S 146.5E

Recent Movement: W at 25 km/h

Remarks: Severe Tropical Cyclone Larry poses a VERY SERIOUS THREAT to life and property in the warning area.

The VERY DESTRUCTIVE CORE of SEVERE TROPICAL CYCLONE LARRY with extreme gusts up to 280 km/hr should cross the coast near INNISFAIL between 7am and 9am this morning. DESTRUCTIVE WINDS are already occurring along the exposed coast between INGHAM and PORT DOUGLAS. GALES are being experienced along the remainder of the exposed coast in the warning area. These winds will ease rapidly later this morning as the cyclone moves inland.

Coastal residents between Cairns and Cardwell are specifically warned of the

DANGEROUS storm tide as the cyclone crosses the coast. The sea is likely to

steadily rise up to a level which will be significantly above the normal tide,

with damaging waves, strong currents and flooding of low-lying areas extending

some way inland.

Severe Tropical Cyclone Larry will move further inland during the day. Although

the cyclone will gradually weaken, the destructive core of Larry will move

across the Atherton Tablelands this morning with gusts to 180 km/h. It will then

move further inland into the Northern Goldfields this afternoon with gusts to

140 km/h.

Marine users please note: Tropical cyclone information specific to the marine community is contained in Coastal Wind Warnings and Ocean Wind Warnings. Refer to those warnings for the areas of strong winds, gales and more intense winds associated with the cyclone.

The next threat map will be issued by 7am AEST Monday 20th March.

Hardly suprising its been upgraded though, I said in a post before that satilite estimates had it upto 115kts which for a Tropical system in this region of the world is really very impressive indeed.

Core now making landfall as well, central pressure at 915mbs, or that of hurricane Isabel in 2003.

its definatly been a good day for watching larry grow ive been at the pc now for about 6 hours tracking this storm looks like there will be another system out to the east right behind larry but will the air be unstable for another TS to form?

The system behind it is already a cyclone, called Wati with 45kts winds and expected to get upto 55kts soon.

gusts with larry expected to reach about 150kts which is really very severe indeed, tohugh most of this sort of winds will stay off-shore with a wind-gust at 143kph (88mph!) already being reported.

BBC news just had a bloke on the phone god did he sound board.lol

Nah, that's just the way we talk over here. Sort of understated when in reality the fella was probably scared to death! Reports thus far are fragmented but it sounds like some nasty damage indeed up north. Some of the calls to local TV stations down here near Sydney have been harrowing.

Its still maybe an hour or two before rescue can get into the town in any numbers.

This report just in from the Sydney Morning Herald in Australia:

http://www.smh.com.au/

"One in three houses have lost their roofs and several people have been hurt in the coastal town where Tropical Cyclone Larry made landfall.

More than half of the houses and buildings in the small town of Innisfail, about 100km south of Cairns, suffered major damage when the category five storm hit about 4am, said Sergeant Gary Burkin of Innisfail police.

The cyclone has now been downgraded to level three.

"There's some buildings that have totally collapsed," Sergeant Burkin said. "It's greater than 50 per cent [damage] for housing and buildings."

About a third of houses had lost their roofs, said Queensland Counter Disaster and Rescue Services (CDRS) executive director Frank Pagano.

Only four residents of Innisfail - which has a population of about 8000 - are believed to have sustained minor injuries, Cairns Police Chief Superintendent Mike Keating said."

Yes, the pictures we are getting this morning with all of the television crews that are there look pretty bad. Lots of damage. All Banana crops and sugar can crops are completely gone, power could be out for weeks and sewer and water supply are pretty much down too. A lot of damage in the town - probably more than first thought. The place basically looks shredded.
