An extremely cold month, offset by an exceptionally mild last week. Up until the 24th, the average temperature was only 3.4°C. The first week featured northerly winds and was very cold indeed. There was no single maxima above 6.8°C and 8 consecutive air frosts, along with heavy snow on the 2nd, giving 1.5cm lying on the ground. The coldest minima occured on 3rd, where it dipped to -5.4°C, the lowest temperature since December 2003 and the coldest March minima Ive ever recorded.

There was then a brief milder period of two days, before easterly winds set in. Although minima were only slightly below average, there were some impressive low maxima for March, including 3.9°C on the 12th and 3.3°C on the 14th - the lowest March maxima Ive ever recorded. The 14th saw heavy snow, with 2cm falling during a single fall, though this quickly thawed throughout the day.

The final week was then exceptionally mild, with an average temperature of 11.2°C. It was also a wet end, with over 25mm of rain falling in the last 7 days of the month. Notable maxima included 16.8°C on the 25th and 17.7°C on the 26th. There were some high minima aswell, with the temperature falling no lower than 9.9°C on the 27th.

Below are the stats for Westbury, Wiltshire for March 2006. This March was 2.21c cooler than 2005 and 1.34c cooler than 2004.

In the interest of showing how the conditions changed in the last week I have added separate stats for the first 23 days and then the last eight days.

Average max = 8.54c (highest = 14c on seven days :lol: )

Average min = 1.67c (lowest - -7c on 4th)

Mean = 5.10c

Dry days = 11

Precipitation days = 20

Wintry precipitation = 9

Rainfall = 69.5mm (actually more than 2005 despite seeming so dry!!)

First 23 days

Average max = 6.73c

Average min = 1.67c

Mean = 3.26c

Last 8 days

Average max = 13.75c

Average min = 7.12c

Mean = 10.43c

So a 7.16c swing in mean tempeature between those two periods of the month. A slight anomaly being that in the first 23 days there was one day (the 8th) where the max was 14c and the min 5c, figures more in keeping with the much warmer last week.

March 2006 Report.

With high pressure over Greenland and low pressure to the NE the first week in to March was very cold with some severe night frosts, although there was a good deal of sunshine here in Burton.

On the 8th things turned milder as the winds turned south westerly, but this was to be short lived as by the 10th the winds veered more north westerly bringing cooler weather back with showers here in Burton. By the 11th winds had turned back in to the east as high pressure began to build over Scandinavia, it became much colder with frost returning and daytime temperatures very low for the time of year. On the 12th a complex situation developed as low pressure in the Atlantic came up against the high over Scandinavia, this gave Burton a period of frontal snow, which lasted most of the day.

On the 14th temperatures recovered in to near normal briefly, but by the 15th the cold easterly wind was back lowering temperatures rapidly. Cold cloudy conditions with slight frost continued to affect the area for the next 7 days. On the 22nd high pressure took control, Burton saw some welcome sunshine for the first time in many days, but it remained cold and with clear skies overnight there was a moderate air frost.

On 24th a significant change in weather patterns took place as the high over Greenland weakened its grip on the British Isles, this opened the door for low pressure to approach from the west, bringing with it south westerly winds, wet conditions and the mildest temperatures since Early November 2005. This mild wet unsettled weather then continued until the end of the month.

Average maximum temperature = 7.2c

Average minimum temperature = 2.2c

Mean temperature = 4.7c – 1.53 below the CET average.

Warmest day on the 26th = 14.9c

Coldest day on the 3rd = 2.2c

Warmest night on the 27th = 11.3c

Coldest night on the 3rd = -5.5c

Ground Frosts = 4

Air frost = 11

Days of snow = 6

Days of lying snow = 2

Deepest snow cover = 1cm

Rainfall total = 37 mm

March 2006 here was cool, dry and windy. The average monthly mean was far more reminiscent of the Marches of the 1980s. Cold, strong NE and E winds dominated the middle period of the month and following on from a cool start, only a late surge of milder weather prevented the coldest March since 1987. In the end it turned out to be only the coldest since 1996. Rainfall was yet again below average, making 15 out of 17 consecutive dry months. Estimated sunshine total was lower then 2005 and probably just a little below average.

hi

March 2006 summary for Cantley, Doncaster; figures in brackets are the Finningley averages 1942-1995.

Mean Min=2.1C(2.1)

Mean Max=8.7C(9.5)

Mean=5.4C(5.8C)

Rainfall=34.1mm(40.5)

Days with 1mm or more=10

Max rainfall=7.4 on 24th

Days with snow/sleet=2(5)

Days with Air Frost=11( :lol:

Days with Ground Frost=14(14)

No fog reported and no thunder

Overall the coldest March since 2001, and the only other March in the past 10 years to have a mean temperature below 7.0C.

Like most others, a month of 2 halves, well ¾ and ¼ I suppose. The first 23 days had a mean temperature of just 3.5C, the final days gave a mean of 11.1C.

Interesting our highest max's and lowest are offset by around 2c which agrees with my feeling when walking on the Peak district. Air frost and ground frosts equal which is strange.

Air frost and ground frosts equal which is strange.

This is one of those statistical quirks arising out of the observation hours.

The daily min' temp' is over 24 hours from 0900 to 0900 whereas the grass min' is from 1800 to 0900. There were two or three occasions when the min' temp' actually occurred at 0900 the previous morning and the following night was air frost free. This offset an equal number of occasions when there was a ground frost overnight but no air frost.

I thought the time period was nine to nine on all readings ???

I thought the time period was nine to nine on all readings ???

According to the Observers Handbook, ' the (grass min') thermometer should be set and exposed at the last observation hour before sunset' and read at 0900 the following morning.

The thermometer should be kept in the screen during the day, or at stations where observations are made only at 0900, fitted with a radiation shield.

There's actually about a page and a half of instructions relating to the Grass min' thermometer but the above is the essence of it.

March 2006 Summary for Cleadon, Tyne & Wear.

Mean Temp: 4.5C (-1.5)

Highest Maximum: 16.4C (26th)

Lowest Maximum: 1.7C (12th)

Days of lying snow at 0900: 5 (also 2 with less than half cover)

Days of snow/sleet falling: 11

Days of hail: 1

Days of thunder: 0

A cold month (the mean temperature up to the 23rd was only 2.8C) but partially offset by the warm last week. It was the snowiest March on a record dating back to 1993, with the 5 days of lying snow equalling the 2001 record, and 11 days of sleet/snow falling beating the previous highest (9 days in 1995). The maximum on the 12th was the lowest in March since 1996.

As a whole, it was the coldest March since 1996, albeit only fractionally colder than March 2001. It was also fractionally colder than February 2006.

Sunshine was probably a little below average in spite of the exceptionally sunny start to the month, due to the persistent cold cloudy easterly weather from the 10th to 21st.
