Severe Weather Expected in the South

8 AM CDT, April 25, 2006

By WeatherBug Meteorologist, Ryan Towell

A storm system will wobble from the Mississippi Valley region this morning into the Ohio Valley later today. At the same time a very chilly air mass behind a powerful cold front will collide with a warm and rather moist air mass in place over the South. The interaction of these two very different air masses is likely to spark intense thunderstorm development by this afternoon.

Hail, high-winds and tornadoes will be a threat from eastern Texas east to the Carolinas. Austin and San Antonio, Texas, Houston, New Orleans, Jackson, Miss., Birmingham, Ala., Atlanta and Charlotte may be under the gun for a time through late evening.

Storms will push through the Southeast overnight with a chance for strong storms lingering into Wednesday.

Just looking on Stormtrack and found this Interesting article, looks like Possible SunBathing weather for the first 6 days of our trip as a Ridge of High Pressure extends across the West of the USA But then it may get interesting for a significant severe outbreak!!

The following is according to Ed Berry,

He has been very accurate!

A link to his latest blog entry: http://weatherclimatelink.blogspot.com/

Its a bit long but here are some highlights:

QUOTE

Punch line is we should see the anomalous zonal mean westerlies come back south and contribute to more full latitude energetic troughs slamming into the western part of the country by the end of week 2 (weekend of May 6-7)

QUOTE

. This should be similar to what was observed during March into early April, only a bit farther northwest.

QUOTE

Severe local storm activity across the Plains may become very robust by the end of this period (understanding the impossible predictability of details like quality of tropical moisture transport, instability, etc.)

**Looks like the 1st few days could see us playing the Upslope Colorado and New Mexico Storms due to a small Low near the vicinity, these storms usually kick off very early and produce some fantastic cloud structures with green skies full of hail, so evenings could be good at getting practise of Lightning Shots before the REAL Weather starts around the 6/7th May. Of course this can and probably still will change over the next few days.

I was just reviewing the maps for Monday-Tuesday of next week. Looks like western South Dakota might be the place to be for good storm chasing. Sometimes when you get the unstable weather and the lows as far north as southern Canada, the cold fronts are only active to about the SD-NE border and a strong cap holds back activity in Nebraska at least until well after sunset in some cases.

Southwest SD is pretty wide open "badlands" country with great scenery in general, F3 tornado activity and large hail being quite common in the southern half of the state. There is a zone in western SD related to the Missouri escarpment where storm development often accelerates in mid-afternoon.

I'll post some thoughts on severe weather locations as the tour gets under way. It seems that the active zone is shifting north next week but chances are it will return to the Kansas-Oklahoma area later in the week.

Interesting that the tornadoes in Missouri followed the same path as the last ones through that area hitting Caruthersville again. Maybe it's trying to take away Sedalia's claim to be the tornado capital of Missouri

you lot never know as you get there you may need to get the digi cams at the ready

http://headlines.accuweather.com/news-stor...adc=0&article=0

The cold front that served as the focus of severe weather Tuesday and Tuesday night from North Carolina to Texas will again trigger severe thunderstorms Wednesday evening for parts of the Southeast. The greatest threat for severe weather will be across southern South Carolina, central and southern Georgia, southeastern Alabama and the northern third of Florida. The main threats in these regions through the first half of Wednesday night will be torrential downpours, large hail and wind gusts in excess of 50 mph. An isolated tornado is possible in the strongest thunderstorms. Most of the thunderstorm activity will be off the Southeast coast by Thursday morning.

Any severe thunderstorms that form Thursday will likely be in West Texas and southeastern New Mexico as instability increases ahead of an approaching upper-level low.

Well it is getting damn close now and only 48 hours till departure so i am looking at the models and seeing what may be in store when we arrive. That damn Death Ridge of High pressure is still trying its hardest to give us Sunbathing weather for the first week but some opportunities may be evident in our first 5 days, looking further ahead the Very Severe Risk is still progged in the models for next weekend 7/8th May. As Follows
