Beautiful start to the day - lovely sunny morning but the wind is back with a vengeance again!

Uselessly drab weather on the m4 this morning. Fatal crash closed the new severn bridge, gusty, grim. Similar here all afternoon, but with drizzle. Strong brief gusts starting here.

I'm currently in Are in Sweden, a ski resort which has just closed for the season. Here the flashy scrolly thing in the hotel tells me it is 4C and there are a few spits of rain. The top of the hill (it doesn't really look like a mountain) at 1400m looks smashing. This place is hosting the skiing world championships next February. Its crap place though.

In the past week the snow line has lifted from 200m to 600m generally, but I was based in Trondheim all last week.

In typical Abingdon style the thaw set at the exact time my plane touched down a week last monday.

Not pleasant going out in the field under 500m as the ground is very wet and there is a layer of frozen soil about 20cm under the surface as hard as rock we have to dig through to put seismometers in.

On the Norway Sweden border at about 700m on the E14 road there was still about 2 metres of snow, but not nice stuff. Grey and horrible, thawing.

Got some great pictures from earlier on though - many of the lakes remain frozen. Will post them when I get back this weekend.
