Heavy rain, thunder and lightning in South Devon. So dark I can hardly see to type! Warm and humid before the rain. 17C and some big Cbs sitting right over us. A fun kind of day to wake up to. Devon will stay green after this. The rain is currently torrential - bouncing up off the roads and patios and making a thunderous noise on the roof. It is knocking hell out of my roses! I can see the petals showering down, through the rain. Localised flooding can't be ruled out if it keeps up.

Paul

PS On reflection, rescuing the parasol and covering the furniture, in the thunder, before the rain, may not have been the brightest thing I have ever done, but hey! I'm still alive! (Just, phew!) :)

Short and sharp and heading off Northwards! Still some distant thunder, but the sun is now trying to poke its way out and the rain has stopped. A perfect spell of heavy rain to soak the garden.

I don't think this is the last thundery activity that will be seen in the UK, and the SW, these next few days. There are lows over France and the forecast temperatures are just too high. The lid will come off, properly, at some time and somewhere should get some spectacular thunderstorms!

Dubai Floods: Another Warning Sign for Desert Regions?

The flooding in the Middle East desert city of Dubai earlier in the week followed record-breaking rainfall. It doesn't rain very often here like other desert areas, but like the deadly floods in Libya last year showed, these rain events are likely becoming more extreme due to global warming.
