Was out at the time, so couldn't report it, but we had a storm in Newquay between 7 and 8Pm. Sounded pretty bad, but was a fair few miles away.

Also had one, I think, out to sea at Newquay between 8 and 9am this morning. Again, sounded very loud, but there was long intervals between thunder. Didn't see any lightning.

Situation with mid day skew-t ascents

Abbreviations=t=temperature; td=dewpoint; 850mb=5000ft; 700mb=10000ft; 600mb=14000ft; kt=knots

First for France

Brest= with temp 24C and dewpoint 17C cloud tops to 37000ft

Trappes(Paris)=T=30 td=16, cloud tops to 37000ft; 850mb=17020kt(?) not sure

600mb=210 25kt

England

Camborne(sw England)

T=26 td=15 tops to 35000ft; 850mb=12025kt; 700mb=17010kt

Herstmanceux(se England)

T=30 td=15 tops=37000ft; 850mb=19010kt; 700mb=17015kt

Watnall(Midlands) t=29 td=15, tops=36000ft and fairly dry at top; 850mb=19010kt; 700mb=21015kt

Albemarle(n England)

Has a marked lid/cap and is unlikely to generate storms in its area, you would have to wait for imported storms further south

Other factors

Heat over France and England will tend to generate small centres of low pressure which aid lift, these are likely to move on a generally northerly track.

minor convergence zones which may develop into local troughs, again over France and England/Wales, will further aid convective devolpment during day time today and tomorrow.

One other factor to be aware of is that whilst convection generally decreases overnight, cloud tops can increase, due to cooling at the top as the sun is no longer there, and this can 'pep' up some storm areas at times.

The 500mb low off Corunna(nw Spain) is predicted to edge slowly about due north over the next 24-48 hours. This will help in the general destabilization of air at most levels over and south to south south west of the UK= in simple terms, more chance of thunderstorms occurring more widely.

brief sharp shower and rumbles of thunder around 1.30pm

broken alt cast and sunny intervals now. 27C

Tamara

Hi Tamara,

Looking at the latest radar from the French Met service,there seems to be some clusters of home grown storms now developing in the Paris Basin. As John Holmes has just pointed out they may trundle into your part of the world later this evening. Worth watching out for.

Around 2.30 came over dark, started to thunder, then came the lightning, some light rain at first. This seemed to stop, then the storm broke overhead. We had torrential rain, large hailstones, thunder/lightning. Looking out of the window the weather looked like what you see on a hurricane report! Local infant school flooded. Reports of storm drains being lifted. I work locally, came in and my porch and garage have been flooded.

At this moment in time, you wouldnt know there had been any rain, and it is so hot again!

Just checked a bucket in the garden and it has about 2.5 inches of water in it!

The thunder here never progressed into anything more.

It went off to the north and east of here.

Can't see any sign of stormy weather now.

Maybe when trying to sleep it will be stormy ?

Just arrived back from west Wales to that at 5pm :doh: Also a storm at about 3 am on Monday morning near Cardigan (some hours after the dry hay was put away - just :p ) Strange, lightning quite close, but very, very quiet thunder. Some strange atmospheric phenomenon!
