what a series of fascintaing charts.

as usual Mr Data we are all indebted to your ability to produce large amounts of really interesting data. Do you have a full time job? Excuse me asking as you produce so much in depth research which is way beyond my time as someone retired!

    regards

    John

Yes I do, a lot of the research I did ages ago and over a period of time. I collected the info onto a computer database and stored on discs. Brian Gaze on TheWeatherOutlook Forum asked me about 3 years ago to write an archive for him. Its over 100 pages and took 2 and a bit years to write, a lot of the info you see crop up is pulled from that archive. The wonders of cut and paste :)

Kevin - second question of the day, but what's your summer index in your signature? How do you work it out?

I found it in an old edition of Weather (September 1986) and I decided to resurrect it after it fell into disuse. It inspired me to device the Winter Index

    Summer Index: 10 X (Mean Max Temp of Summer + [(sunshine total/67) - (rain days/ 8) ])

Rain day is days when rain is observed as opposed to to the amount fallen, the amount fallen can distort the index. For instance in August 1981, 140mm of rain fell during that month but 95mm of that fell in one night, 23 days during that month recorded no rain.

OK - great idea: thanks for that. And thanks for the charts too which are a remarkable archive.

So this summer's summer index has a really good chance of beating 1976?

tks for the explanation, its certainly very interesting to see these items you pull out.

Also the summer and winter index idea, not too sure, although I have just seen your explanation of the summer one, equally I'm sure you have explained the winter one but I've 'lost' it!

    tks again

    John

Bloody terrific! ('scuse the swearing, but in this one instance, I thought it might be justified!). I'm in awe. Thanks Mr. D! I think I love you for posting such a fantastic sequence of charts. So useful to me! 8)8)

Look at that 20C 850hpa isotherm on 10.08/03. We won't get 38.5C with our present chart. I'm not sure that 03/07/76 is achievable with the 06z gfs, but the position of the 15C isotherm, on the 850hpa chart is almost similar and almost as far north and 35.9C was recorded than.

    Thanks again, Paul

Kevin just had another look at the 35 scenarios posted: clearly the majority show high pressure to the ease/south east and low pressure to the west/north west giving a south/south east/easterly flow. What is more intersting are the exceptions: 1885, 1921, 1932, 1933, 1950, 1952, (1955?), 1976, 1983, 1990 and 1995...
