Astronomers have witnessed a supernova occurring in real time. An initial X-ray flash alerted astronomers that the star was about to go supernova. The supernova occurred 400 million light years away or 400 million years ago by Earth time, the Devonian epoch on Earth when the first amphibians appeared

Fascinating! It boggles my mind to think that the supernova happened so long ago but the light from it is only now reaching Earth. Even the light we now see coming from Proxima Centauri 'shone' in early Summer 2002 :) !
