    Please add your statistics for August 2006.

    Mine are fascinating temperature wise, in fact I can't quite believe it even though my sig has hinted at the consistency!

    Average max = 21.38c (Highest = 29c on 6th)

    Average min = 12.67c (Lowest = 6c on 25th)

    Mean = 17.02c (0.61c below my 4 year average)

    Dry days = 16

    Rain days = 15

    Rainfall = 54mm (1.5mm less than 2005)

    Here's the fascinating part...

    Consistent Temperatures

    Maximums

    20c = 3 days

    21c = 8 days

    22c = 10 days

    23c = 4 days

    25 days in that region of maxxes, 2 days went higher & 4 stayed lower.

    Minimums

    11c = 6 nights

    12c = 5 nights

    13c = 7 nights

    14c = 7 nights

    Again, 25 days in that regions of mins, 3 stayed higher & 3 went lower.

    More consistency with the rainfall with a near as possible amount of dry days to rain days! 39mm of the 54mm total fell between the 17th-20th which was a very thundery period.

    (Mods : I couldn't find a similar thread anywhere, if I missed it please merge, thanks.)

    A stark contrast to the preceding two months; an autumnal feel prevailing on most days from the 10th onwards. Probably quite a contrast between east and west of England this month, due to prevalence of N'ly winds with a Polar Maritime airflow and off the North Sea which brought some very low maxes in mid month here...

    - COOL. COOLEST August since 1993

    - DULL. SUNSHINE estimated at no more than approx 70% of average. Probably least sunny August since 1992

    - Slightly WETTER than average with more rain days than normal but NO THUNDER

    - EvapoTranspiration loss still exceeded monthly rainfall total

    - LOWEST monthly mean barometer since March 2006

    hi

    Here with my August stats with a few comments along with one for the summer

    Temps are in degrees C, long term averages in brackets

    Mean temp=16.7(16.0)

    Average min=12.5(11.3)

    average max=20.9(20. :(

    rainfall=84.4mm(58.2mm)

    Most in a day=22.4mm on 18th

    21 days with 0.2mm or more and 13 days with 1.0mm or more.

    Thunder=4(3)

    fog, snow air and ground frost =zero

    So the month ended just a touch above the average, thanks to the high mins.

    The month was the wettest August in this area(using the Finningley data and my own data) for 20 years. Others nearby have recorded even higher values this August.

    The summer

    Its the warmest in this area since I started doing my checks in 1997, (some 2.4C above the 25 year average, using the Finningley data and my own)

    August 2006 Report.

    By Paul Carfoot.

    In total contrast to the hot dry sunny weather of July, the first couple of days in to August saw low pressure take control to the north of the British Isles. The first couple of days here in Burton were cool and unsettled with quite a bit of rain.

    By the 5th a ridge of high pressure began to extend from the Azores, igniting hopes of a continuation of the hot sunny weather of July, unfortunately this fine spell was to be short lived, on the 6th I recorded the highest temperature for the month of 25.9c.

    By the 9th pressure began to fall once again, which effectively ended any hopes of a long hot summer, temperatures failed to exceed 21c for 10 consecutive days here. It was also quite wet at times too, especially on the 23rd when I recorded 18mm of rain during an overhead thunderstorm.

    The last week of August became prematurely autumnal with the very unsettled weather continuing as low pressure was never very far away from the British Isles, the weather was basically very wet, dull and at times blustery.

    Summary.

    In total contrast to July’s very hot dry sunny weather, August was mainly dull damp, very unsettled and also very wet and at times windy.

    Stats below are calculated using the average of the mean monthly maximum and the mean monthly minimum.

    Average maximum temperature = 19.8c

    Average minimum temperature = 13.7c

    Mean temperature = 16.75c + 0.55c above the 1971 – 2000 CET average.

    Warmest day on the 6th = 25.9c

    Coldest day on the 9th = 15.5c

    Warmest night on the 29th = 20.6c

    Coldest night on the 25th = 8.7c

    Ground Frosts = 0

    Air frost = 0

    Thunderstorms = 1

    Wettest day on the 28th = 10mm

    Rainfall total = 80mm

    August 2006 for Cleadon, Tyne & Wear

    Averages are estimates for the local area based on Met Office graphs, for reference period 1971-2000.

    Mean max: 18.9C (+0.0)

    Mean min: 12.3C (+1.0)

    Mean temperature: 15.6C (+0.5)

    Highest max: 27.2C (6th)

    Lowest min: 8.4C (25th)

    Lowest max: 13.8C (13th)

    Highest min: 18.8C (6th)

    Rainfall: 59mm

    Wettest: 30mm (2nd)

    Days of thunder: 2

    Days of hail: 2

    Days of fog: 1

    Other August mean temperatures for comparison: 2005 15.3, 2004 16.2, 2003 16.6, 2002 16.0, 2001 15.7, 2000 15.6, 1999 14.7.

    Apart from the notably warm day on the 6th this was a very unremarkable month, with remarkable homogeneity in temperature- daytime maxima were between 16 and 20C on two-thirds of the days. Thunder occurred on the 19th and 21st, while two showery days on the 28th and 29th both produced hailstorms.

    The summer as a whole was the warmest since I started taking records, though only beating 2003 by 0.1C. My suspicion is that in terms of mean temperature it was probably the warmest summer in the area since 1976. It was also the driest since 1995. Sunshine wise, due to the remarkable July, it was probably the sunniest since 1995.

    Overall a very average month with regards to temperature, but also very wet and dull. The monthly rainfall of 111.7mm is the wettest month Ive ever recorded and actually meant the summer as a whole finished with close to average rainfall, despite a dry June and July.

    Temperatures were generally close to average all month, with the exception of a warm first weekend where it reached 26.9°C (5th) and 29.1°C (6th). The 11th-15th saw a cooler spell, with 5 days below 19.0°C. The weather throughout the month was uniformly mostly cloudy or dull, with little sunshine and never more than 2 dry days in a row.

    It was also the first summer month since July 2003 where a single figure minima was not recorded, though only the 6th had a minima above 15°C. In this regard, the month had very stable temperatures, with few notable extremes.
