Network IP Cameras

With winter coming up, I fancy adding some webcam to my marvellous website, and have a great vantage point on my anemometer mast high above the house, which looks over the Edev Valley towards the Pennines. Would make for pretty winter shots.

I know you can get weatherproof webcams, but the cable run up to it would be getting on for 25m, and I don't really think USB could cope with that. So does anyone have experience of Network IP cameras? Ethernet cable would easily cope with the distance, and supply the power using power over ethernet. They're expensive, but is the image quality a lot better?

Advice please!

Hi OON

IP cams, like any other, come in different flavours.. the higher the resolution the sharper the picture.. The only advantage with IP cams is the ability to upload directly to a website (or a network) without need for computer interfacing.. Eithernet would cause no problems at the short distance you're thinking about..

My webcam (which reminds me i need to reboot it) is an old vhs c camera that i got from ebay for a tenner. i use the video out and just capture the image through a capture card.. wrapped the whole thing in clingfilm to waterproof it and fastened it to a 40ft scaffold pole..

hope this helps

Paul

Oh right....I thought their quality was meant to be far better too and the fact that they're properly powered meant they didn't have problems like condensation. Having said all that, the expense of them is way too high and I think I'll just go for a webcam like everyone else!

This would sort my webcam problems out....I could then put a normal webcam underneath the eves of my shed, so it was weather proof but still had a nice view.

Not too far from you, just outside Alston, this guy set up a weather webcam. The site has an evaluation report of the cameras he tested. See link below:

When it’s not snowing, point it at Mrs Higginbottom’s bedroom window and set up a pay per view website. You’ll soon recoup the expense.

If I point it at Mrs Higginbottom's window, you'd better pray it's night time and there's a power cut and your eyes have just fallen out and you've got no internet connection.

I thought she was a lady of the night and is therefore everyone's 'auntie'.
