My daughter is due to fly home from Chicago tomorrow evening but has been messaged by her airline to say that due to severe thunderstorms and damaging winds being forecast it is likely to be postponed or cancelled.

After a brief cool down in southern Alberta the heat returns yet again. It’s looking likely that we are witnessing the hottest month ever in some parts, certainly Calgary and surrounding areas.

As of August 21 it was on track to be record breaking, even with the cool down. But with the forecast this week of temps back into the high 20’s and 30’s before September comes, I think we might just see the record go.

Certainly has been quite memorable. I’ve never known the mountains to be this warm for this long especially during August. It’s the nighttime lows that are unusually warm. Potential no lower than 14oC/15oC this weekend. In September.

It actually turned out the 2nd hottest August ever in Calgary just behind 1971. Not sure about Edmonton though.

Amazing to see most of southern Alberta still under a heat warning this weekend with temps well into the 30’s.

Looks like Tuesday/Wednesday will be the cool down to something more seasonal. With cooler rainy weather by the end of the week.

I have a funny feeling we’ll pay for it this winter. 🥶

Roasting hot day today. I wouldn’t be surprised to see the hottest September day ever be broken in some parts of Alberta today.

@cheeky_monkey Currently showing Edmonton at 33oC with 36oC forecast within a few hours? If that’s true that’s gotta be a record

Typhoon Merbok, still causing issues in the Bering Strait:

Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Fairbanks AK 232 PM AKDT Sat Sep 17 2022 .

SYNOPSIS... All eyes continue to be on the powerful storm that is moving through the Bering Strait, remnants of Typhoon Merbok, as it moves north into the Southern Chukchi by Sunday morning. This storm is responsible for historical coastal flooding that is impacting many coastal communities along the West Coast from the Lower Yukon Delta north into Norton Sound and to the Bering Strait.

As flooding continues for many locations, with a few areas set to peak this afternoon across the Norton Sound Region, we are expecting water levels to begin to slowly recede for the Lower Yukon Delta this evening and across the Norton Sound Region late Sunday morning. This continues to be a very dangerous storm as it is producing water levels higher than anyone has seen in at least the last 50 years.

October starts as September ends in the Rocky Mountains. Sunny warm days in the 20’s and cool crisp nights in the low single digits. It’s been a very good summer/Fall.

It’s always this time of year that I get a sense of delusion/wishful thinking that this will continue but reality is that the ski season starts in around 5 weeks.

It may still feel like late summer but Winter is coming. ❄️

yep here in Alberta it is the best and worst time of the year..weather is usually pretty much perfect warm days and cool nights rarely is it wet and is mostly sunny..the flip side the worst time of the year is almost upon us..its already Dark until 8am and the numbing cold and snow is just round the next corner..once it begins you know you are stuck with cold and darkness for the next 5-6 months 😰

Just thought I'd share this photo of when I was in Death Valley a few weeks ago. Just prior to me being there they had almost record breaking heat in the low 50's celcius, which then gave way to cooler temperatures and more moisture caused by Hurricane Kay just off the south west coast of California. After this was taken we almost got stuck in the resulting flash flooding in the basin but fortunately turned around just in time as the road was getting covered in rocks and debris as well as the torrent of water.  Around 40 or so vehicles did get stranded though before they closed the road off.

I couldn’t do Edmonton winters. We’re very lucky that the mountains moderate the winters, especially with the frequent Chinooks. We’re doing bad if we have more than two weeks of minus 30. At least the sunshine helps. Although by February I’m ready for the warmer weather

Happy Canadian Thanksgiving weekend. 🇨🇦

It may well become one of the warmest Thanksgiving weekends in Alberta history.

Many places continuing the late summer weather with forecast well into the 20’s.

Though late Monday looks set to change with snow possible in the foothills.

The turkey is certainly feeling confused...

And certainly no need for the usual trip to storm mountain to have the fire roaring...

If you’re ever in Canmore you’ll end up seeing our local celebrity ‘big Ed’....

And finally to finish up with a typically Canadian picture of the Rockies on this rather balmy Thanksgiving...

Probably the best Summer/Fall weather in nearly 20 years. Weather continues in the 20’s BUT the cool down is coming....

2-4cm of snow and day time temps hovering around freezing by next weekend...Now that’s gonna be a shock to the system.

It’s probably the latest I’ve not seen any snow on the mountains @ 8000ft. At this rate the Scottish hills will have snow on them before the Canadian Rockies.

The Indian summer in the Rockies is ending with a bang. Not a thunderstorm bang but a snowstorm bang. The first snowfall warning of the season has been issued. Some regions might get up to 20cm’s. It’s coming....❄️

Warning upgraded for up to 25cm. Certainly can’t see that around Canmore due to melt but still have today and tonight.

Winter is finally setting in ..... lots of snow and cold on the horizon. Maybe 30cm’s of snow over the  week and lows in the minus teens.  ❄️🥶 (Mind you when it’s minus 30 I’ll be saying now it’s winter proper lol)

It’s certainly getting later and later - that must appeal to you and your dislike of winter

Another snowfall warning for Canmore. I can’t see it as they’ve got the last few warnings totally wrong.
