The cold October of 1974

October 1974 was a notably cold month with a CET of 7.8, the coldest since 1919. Winds with a northerly component were frequent during the month and snow fell at times especially across northern hills but snow was reported even in the southeast on the 7th at Stansted Airport. There was a notable strong northerly flow on the 28th with snow drifting across the Highlands in winds gusting up to 80mph.

The CET mean for the period 27th September-6th November 1974 was 7.65C

The first half of October 1974 was a half a degree colder than the second half of December 1974 and was colder overall than December 1974, CETwise

Sounded like a very chilly month

Greeny and a scandi high there...great looking chart

But as you say a mild winter followed... false hopes of seeing a set-up like that in october.
