Yep, thunderstorm with heavy rain in effect over NW Bristol (Westbury-on-Trym) at present.

Infrequent but brilliant flashes of lightning - rain getting heavier once more.

A little one here.

Just starting here in Plymouth city centre now- some nice large rumbles and the sky is black as the ace of spades. :o

Absolutely huge cracks of thunder overhead around 1:15pm and torrential rain!

If anyone else on here noticed them, they were very similar indeed to the

ones I descibed months ago over Lynmouth.

The cloud was similar as well. It was as if the lightning was striking out of

a high-level cloud miles above the surface, so it must have been very

high voltage lightning indeed.

Afternoon,

Just had a storm pass over which was a little unexpected (teach me to watch the beeb forecast! NW storm risk map shiows 60% for the SW). It has been a very grey, misty, dark overcast morning with no cloud definition. Storm came over about 13.00 and has passed over now. Fairly active lightning every 20 secs or so (mainly C-C I think) with moderate rain. Sky had darkened to the south and the storm appears to have then moved north or N/E but what low level cloud that is visible appears to be moving rapidly westwards towards the moors.

Cheers

S

Edit - Opps, just looked at the beeb web site and they do indeed have a Tstorm forecast. Must have been watching an outof date news 24 forecast late last night or not paying attention!

Huge thunderstorm over Bristol around lunchtime today with bright flashes of lightning, hail and torrential rain. Some very loud thunder too! The bl**dy fire alarm at school went off and we had to line up in the courtyard in the pouring rain! B) but at least there was a storm - the 3rd this month. :D

Dubai Floods: Another Warning Sign for Desert Regions?

The flooding in the Middle East desert city of Dubai earlier in the week followed record-breaking rainfall. It doesn't rain very often here like other desert areas, but like the deadly floods in Libya last year showed, these rain events are likely becoming more extreme due to global warming.
