The forecast for a stronger cycle seems to be on track, according to this.

One heliophysicist's model of solar activity is on track.

So, no repeat of the Little Ice Age then? Not that anyone would have noticed the recent Solar minimum, were it not so heavily publicised! And, still the globe keeps warming?🤔

Nope and winters during the recent solar minimum were somewhat different to those at the beginning of SC24!!

Last night's published solar flux was 251.9 !!

However, this was flare-enhaned as a long-duration M flare was in progress at the time.

The 2300z reading was 133.5 and I expect this to be the "official" value for the day.

CME IMPACT SPARKS AURORAS, BUT NO STORM: As predicted, a CME grazed Earth's magnetic field during the early hours of Aug. 29th. The weak impact did not cause a geomagnetic storm, but it did shake things up enough to spark auroras around the Arctic Circle:

The UK as a whole is overdue a spectacular auroral display.  I think the last one was at the end of October 2003.   I saw the 6th/7th April 2000 display and that was unforgettable.

Increased activity increases chances of this happening.

Sounds good to me, I’d very much like to see this over plymouth and seeing the dancing Gods and Foxes within the Aurora itself.

It’s party time 🥳

I wondered if you had picked it up from Irlam that night, it was cloudy rather in the NW. It was photographed from Norfolk though.

'Lost CME' sparks auroras over Iceland: Every day the sun hurls multiple CMEs into space. Many are faint; some overlap; they go in all directions. It's inevitable that space weather forecasters lose track of some of them. On Sept. 26th, one of those "lost CMEs" hit Earth, sparking this display over Iceland:

A CRACK IN EARTH'S MAGNETOSPHERE: Bright auroras are dancing around the Arctic Circle on Oct 22nd as a significant crack opens in Earth's magnetosphere. This is the view right now from Abisko, Sweden:

Was this quieter period expected?

Solar cycles consist of more active and quieter periods superimposed on the general cycle curve. There was a drop off in activity to a certain extent during November but has picked up in December, and decidedly ramped up through the first half of this month to the extent that the solar flux has been above 200 for several days, peaking at 234 and has surpassed the highest daily official reading set in Cycle 24 (227.1).

Interesting times for us radio guys.

Latest summary of the cycle so far in my thread on the Skywaves forum linked to in this thread.
