We missed the best of the night's display here in the Peak District no thanks to some pesky showers, however a bit of waiting around for 2 hours produced a brief flare-up of colours out towards the north. Not quite the light pillars like many were fortunate to see but it's still something, and a bonus was a bright meteor that lasted well over 2 seconds towards the Ursa Major constellation.

Back home at midnight before the roads got too icy.

 GreyCrag Nice photo

I didn't get out until after 10 pm as it was cloudy. Took a few photos 10.45- 11.45.

There may of been Quadrantid meteors around. I saw a decent one about 11pm, lasted a couple of seconds. I only saw one, luckily had my wide angle at 11mm.

Sprites Thanks very much, here's a slightly improved LR version from last night's efforts now that i've slept on it 😄 the Samsung NX1000 is fine but ISO past 1600 is just blegh. Hopefully there'll be more Aurora's to chase under clearer skies in the year ahead.

Some great photos on here. @Sprites Love the Meteor photo.

Despite the clouds the SAR arc was quite something. The first time I’ve seen it as well. Steve is on the bucket list next.

GreyCrag Do you use the NX1000 much?

Sprites I've used it a few times for some landscape shots but it's susceptible to the annoying program bug where it decides 'M' mode wants to be 'A' mode or runs through all of them without touching the dial, when it does decide to play nice it's fairly simple to use but i'd recommend a more capable A6000 than the Samsung sensor. Aurora or Night photography there's very little to no chance with this 😄

The coronal hole in the northern  hemisphere responsible for the strong solar wind has moved round now but it has been replaced by a group of rather complex sunspots, numbered 1976 to 1980  by NOAA with the 76 group being designated beta gamma delta.  The area has produced three M class flares since Friday lunchtime the third of which was an hour ago.

LASCO has also shown a CME earlier this morning that has full halo characteristics. It is unclear at the mo if it was towards or away (i.e far side of the sun) from us but worth keeping an eye open for alerts.

Good news is the Solar Demon real time flare detection site is back up and running after being down for a few months.

The Presto alert system suggests the full halo CME was likely a far side event as they can't marry it to any flare signatures. Pity as it looked big, slow moving and with an equatorial alignment.
