This is probably the most stupid question you have had on here, but I've just joined so thought I would ask it anyway.

I've recently moved to North Lowestoft in Suffolk, and my house overlooks the North Sea facing East.

We have been here about 4 months and in that time the wind has only come from the South and West.

Could someone explain why the wind comes only from those directions?

    Many thanks.

Hi Diane, put basically the general wind direction for the whole UK is the southwest - in the northern hemisphere the jetstream and therefore most systems travel west to east for the majority of the time. It just happens at the moment we're into a spell of very atlantic dominated weather (ie our weather is coming from that direction all the time).

There will be times of southerlies, easterlies, northerlies etc - but if you average it across a year you will find that the majority of the time, the wind will be from a westerly quarter. B)

    Thanks Paul.

By the way it's torrential rain, and thunder and lightning here right now.
