Are the NAO and the NAM indistinguishable?

Morning all. I found this little gem tucked away in this months Journal of Atmospheric Sciences:

http://ams.allenpress.com/perlserv/?reques...175%2FJAS3798.1

Sorry, but I don't have access to the whole paper.

The conclusions are interesting; The NAO and NAM appear to be indistinguishable, and is/are neither specifically Atlantic nor specifically Annular.

What I'd like to know is if this has any important implications to our understanding of weather synoptics, and, with reference to the NAO, what we should make of the conclusion that it is not uniquely an Atlantic phenomenon. Do we need to reconsider these phenomena and redefine them?

Suggestions, please.

:)P
