For the record I'm posting this plot in here as well as in the main thread. It's a rare example of the kind of cold-warm battle that characterised the very snowy winter of 1978-79.

Note a number of things: the shart gradient across the front even in a narrow lateral band (50 miles or less) and the fact that the wind is all but 180 degrees opposed across the front.

The dividing line between cold and warm is a fine one in these set-ups, and so the weather experienced on the ground varies dramatically: hence why forecasting with precision more than 12 hours out is fraught with difficulty.
