Woahh...freakish incident here. The whole estate just had a power cut. Various searchlights were appearing as people attempted to see with their torches.

The brightness is determined by how deep the moon goes into the Earth's umbral shadow and about how "dirty" the atmosphere is ie, the amount of aerosols are present. The moon can be very dark and almost invisible as it was during the December 1992 lunar eclipse. This was attributed to the aerosols present in the atmosphere caused by the Mt Pintabou eruption of the previous year. The scale that is used to estimate the brightness of a total lunar eclipse is called the Danjon Scale. It ranges from 0: very dark, to 4 which is very bright orange.

At the moment it looks like its got a polar ice cap

Very little left of the moon - it looks like a fingernail. No orangey glow yet but I'm still looking.

I still find it hard to imgaine that its the earths shadow that is causing the moon to go red. Its the scale at which this happens which is hard to get my head around. Only 4 minutes to go.
