Russ I would be grateful if you would take the photo to work to see if you colleagues could help with the ID. The bird did appear tame sitting in the garden for an hour eating while two of my cats were running around... :  For those interested took photos with a canon 5d and 100-400l lens

I have no idea what your bird is Phil, but you captured it beautifully. I use a 5D and a 100-400L lens myself. A great combination, although the lens is a bit too big to take on most overseas trips. That's a good advert for it, though.

PS, Kar - any more puns/innuendos like that and you'll be up before the beak...the :ahem: wise old owl himself, OON. Liked it though.

It looks rather like one we had as kids, Pepe was his name. Don't you think so Karen ann?

That's why I got you to take a look. Thought he looked like Pepe too. Mind you can't be him, he's been dead over 28 yrs! Or could it???? ;)

Definitely a finchy-type thing. It's the wrong shape for a canary.

I thought maybe that but this one definitely looks like a hybrid canary that I had once - and the beak is not as sharp and pointy as most finches - I first thought of a chaffinch, but its not that I don't think.

Well i e-mailed the RSPB reserve manager the pictures.

His reply:- No Idea what species of bird that is. It's obviously a finch/bunting but seems to have elements of several species. Finch's of various species have been, and still are, kept and bred as pets; which suggests to me that this bird could be an escaped cross breed. Certainly nothing I've come across.(quote)

I hope this helps.

But canaries are finches (fringillidae if we wish to be technical), aren't they (closely related to serins and citril finches)? My ex RSPB friends both said that they thought it was a canary (and I hadn't given them any clues).

Cheers Russ, looks like we probably won't get a definate answer, hopefully my garden will become a regular stop for it when it's hungry, it made a nice change from the usual visitors

Its still 100% a canary

http://www.aqualandpetsplus.com/Bird_7.jpg

Note it has no ring, and it is in really good condition, could be a "wild" one?

In most of the pictures it has puffed itself up, therefore isn't the canary shape one would expect.

The colour and pattern of plain yellow feathers and normal looking bird feathers are standard fair for canaries. If you live near a large pet shop go in and have a look.
