We have recorded great rainfalls past few days here. Totals around 70mm for May. Therefore theres influences of development of La Nina. Longer and stronger easternlies approaching next week. This will bring alot of showers and coastal thunderstorms. Also the sea surface temperatures have increased in Coral Sea.

There are very heavy thunderstorms up in Sunshine Coast past 24 hours and some places in Brisbane suburbs. Some places recorded over 70mm of rain! Those thunderstorms/showers are moving towards the west from the offshore that is associated by warm sea surface temperatures.

Hopefully we get our drought broken in SE QLD!

Crikey, the rains are here!'

Daniel Howe, Sunday June 3, 2007 - 17:39 EST

It will continue to rain over Queensland this week, and it looks like nearly every part of the state will get a piece of the action.

Currently, the rain area is focused mainly through the central and western districts where thunderstorms have also been observed, and the coast.

On Sunday, Injune picked up 31 millimetres, which is more than they normally get in the entire month of June. Overnight in the southeast, showers made it into catchments, Moogerah Dam picking up 11mm.

The main rain area will shift east on Monday, leaving most inland areas dry. Then from Wednesday through to Friday, rain will once again become widespread throughout the state.

By the end of the week an accumulation of over 30mm throughout the south is possible. It is sorely needed as the region is almost completely drought declared.

Widespread rain ahead for southeast Queensland and northeast NSW

Matt Pearce, Tuesday June 5, 2007 - 14:30 EST

The best rain in months is set to fall across northeast New South Wales and southeast Queensland over the next few days, according to Weatherzone.

Southeast Queensland and northeast New South Wales have missed out on all the rain events that have affected the rest of eastern Australia in recent months. As a result, the water storage situation is starting to become dire.

Light rain began falling across central Queensland last night. Gladstone received 31mm to 9am today, its highest rainfall since September last year.

“Rain will extend southwards across southeast Queensland and into northeast New South Wales tomorrow. We are expecting more falls in the 30 to 40 millimetre range,” Weatherzone meteorologist Matt Pearce said.

“We are then likely to see a low form off the east coast, probably somewhere off northeast New South Wales. This will cause winds and rain to increase, with some falls approaching 100 millimetres possible.”

“At this stage, there is still quite a lot of uncertainty about exactly where the low will form and in what direction it will track. This will influence which parts of the coast receive the heaviest rain.”

Despite the uncertainty in exact location of the heavy rain, this system still promises to be the best rain-producer across northeast New South Wales in months.

“With the breakdown of El Nino and the possible development of La Nina, these types of systems are what we are expecting to become more frequent over the next few months. Although it bodes well for the parched catchments of southeast Queensland, there is still a long way to go before we can proclaim an easing in the drought in this part of the world,” Pearce said.

-----------------------------------------------------

I afraid of that gonna bring us severe winds, dangerous surf and flooding rains most of the week extending through next week! Massive rainband and widespread thunderstorms on our radar now and they are coming from north to northwest. It kinda fast moving. By the way, i think this rain event is part of drought breaking rains for SEQLD and other areas in NSW.

I heard on the news and they said rain, thunderstorms and gales for our area going to last for 5 days!

Hopefully going to bring us good totals!

Rain coming to eastern NSW but so is the wind

Brett Dutschke, Tuesday June 5, 2007 - 17:59 EST

Rain developing across northeastern New South Wales today will spread south by the end of the week. But it is going to get very windy too.

Rain over the next few days looks like it will be the most substantial for the east coast and ranges in months. Some locations should get close to 100mm worth north of about Sydney. Catchments may not get as much as this, but should still do quite well.

This rainfall will coincide with a couple days of gale-force winds, which may cause damage. Beach erosion is a probable outcome due to potentially large seas and swells.

A low pressure system likely to form off the east coast by the end of the week will cause the wind, rain, seas and swells to increase.

The low should weaken and move away early next week causing rain to mostly clear. Winds will also ease, but could still bring a few showers to the coast until mid-week.

Sydney cops a drenching, still hope for catchment

Daniel Howe, Friday June 8, 2007 - 18:22 EST

Sydney’s had a good dose of rain over the past couple of days, with some suburbs accumulating over 80 millimetres since Wednesday.

Along with torrential rainfall, severe weather warnings have been in place for hazardous winds and damaging surf. There have been reports of power outages, traffic accidents and airport delays, all due to these inclement conditions.

There is potential for another 100mm to fall over the metro area by the end of the long weekend. Warragamba Dam, now at 33.5% capacity, should another 30mm before it clears early Sunday.

Frantic search for 9 feared missing in floods

Up to nine people are now missing after a car was washed off a highway on the New South Wales central coast.

The ambulance service says the car was carrying two adults and two children when it was swept off a collapsed section of the flooded Old Pacific Highway at Somersby.

Ambulance spokeswoman Jennifer Pedven says it is believed another five people are also missing.

"Five bystanders went to help the people in the car and all five have been washed away," she said.

She says ambulance crews, police, and the State Emergency Service are searching frantically for the missing group.

The Pacific highway is closed at Wisemans Ferry Road.

Meanwhile, the search for a four-wheel drive vehicle that has reportedly been swept into a creek at Clarence Town in the Hunter Valley has been suspended for the night because of bad weather.

The State Emergency Service in New South Wales says it is now receiving 250 calls an hour as the severe weather continues to cause flooding, bring down trees and damage buildings.

More than 50,000 homes on the state's central coast have no electricity; about 5,000 are without power in the Hunter region and 2,000 homes have lost power supply in Sydney.

SES spokesman Phil Campbell says conditions may ease in the Hunter but there are severe weather warnings for Sydney and the Illawarra.

"There is some severe weather moving into the Sydney metropolitan and possibly the Illawarra areas and people should take ... precautions like making sure there no loose items around the yard and staying clear of fallen trees, powerlines and making sure that they also stay away from floodwaters," he said.

Flood warnings are current for the Myall River and for the Patterson and Williams Rivers.

An aerial search has failed to find any trace of a car with two elderly people on board, that was reportedly swept off a bridge at Clarence Town.

A 12-year-old boy has been taken to hospital in a serious but stable condition with hypothermia after becoming caught in a stormwater drain in the Newcastle.

It is understood another person - who rescued the boy - was taken to hospital, also suffering hypothermia.

The ACT Emergency Services Agency will send a team of volunteers to the Hunter Valley to help with emergency relief efforts.

Up to 30 SES personnel will leave from their Curtin headquarters at 6am AEST on Saturday morning, after the New South Wales Government requested assistance.

It's mighty chilly near the border

Daniel Howe, Friday June 8, 2007 - 18:27 EST

Amongst all of the severe weather occurring in NSW at the moment, the Northern Tablelands and southern Queensland are experiencing a bitterly cold snap.

On Friday, most parts of the Darling downs had their coldest day in two years. Charleville, further west, had its coldest day in 21 years.

By noon, Armidale was only at 3 degrees. While there has been light rain throughout the day, there is potential for snowfall, up to about 5cm, by Saturday morning.

There have already been a few snow showers on the higher peaks of the Northern Tablelands.

The chilly conditions are due to a distinct region of cold air, known as a cold pool. It should move into the Tasman by late Saturday, with a return to conditions that are more typical of June by Sunday.

Monster storm wreaks havoc along NSW coast

Saturday June 9, 2007 - 08:29 EST

A significant part of New South Wales has been declared a natural disaster area after a savage storm which has been compared to a mini-cyclone swept through Newcastle, caused havoc on the Central Coast, and went on to lash Sydney.

Hundreds of thousands of people are without power, power lines and trees have collapsed onto roadways, buildings have been damaged, roofs have been swept away, motorists have abandoned cars as floodwaters rise and there are reports of snow south of Tamworth.

Hundreds of homes across the region have been evacuated.

Police are still looking for two adults and three children at Somersby on the Central Coast after a section of the highway collapsed and their car was swept away by floodwaters yesterday.

The car has been found but there is still no sign of the family.

The bodies of an elderly couple whose four-wheel drive was washed off a bridge by floodwaters at Clarence Town in the Hunter Valley were found overnight.

Large sections of Newcastle remain flooded, with roads cut and trees across roofs.

Senior Constable Tony Tamplin says people need to stay away from Newcastle CDB and off the roads.

"Really at this stage there's no need for sightseers to come into the city," he said.

"There's a fair bit of carnage in here, we've got cars abandoned all over the streets, it's like an old war movie.'

The State Emergency Service has had more than 5,000 calls for help but says it is impossible to reach everyone because of the wind and flooding.

People right along the east coast between Newcastle and the Illawarrra are advised to stay indoors.

New South Wales Premier Morris Iemma declared the worst-affected regions around the Hunter Valley and Newcastle as natural disaster areas last night and is considering declaring a state of emergency.

Meanwhile Sydneysiders are being warned to brace for more wild weather this morning as the Bureau of Meteorology warns that another low pressure system is forming off the coast and will move closer to the city today.

Iemma declares natural disaster

New South Wales Premier Morris Iemma says his thoughts and prayers are with the families of those missing in severe storms which have caused widespread damage across the state.

Mr Iemma has declared a natural disaster for the Hunter and Central Coast regions which have been hardest hit by the storms.

The declaration comes after 24 hours of severe storms which brought gale force winds and flooding.

Emergency Services Minister Nathan Rees says nine people are missing at Somersby after a section of the Old Pacific Highway collapsed and a car was swept away.

In the Hunter Valley, two people are missing after a four-wheel drive was reportedly washed off the road by flood waters at Clarence Town in the Hunter Valley.

Mr Iemma says everything possible is being done to find those who are missing.

"The incident at Somersby is deeply disturbing and that rescue mission continues," he said.

"It is pitch black, it's dangerous, but the emergency workers are risking their own lives to continue to search. We're all hoping, we're all praying that they can be found safely."

The declaration means those affected by the storms can get emergency financial assistance immediately.

Mr Iemma says the State Emergency Management committee will meet in the morning to discuss if a state of emergency should be declared.

Snow falls in upper Hunter region, more gales for Newcastle

Saturday June 9, 2007 - 11:00 EST

The extreme weather front has dropped a blanket of snow over large parts of the upper Hunter region in New South Wales.

The Bureau of Meteorology says the heavy rain has now largely cleared from the Hunter and central coast, with rainfall now concentrated on Sydney and Wollongong.

Winds which have eased this morning in Sydney are expected to pick up again this afternoon from the south.

Newcastle is bracing for a resumption of the severe weather that tore through the region last night, with more gale force winds and heavy rain expected this afternoon.

At the top of the Liverpool Ranges, north of Murrurundi, several centimetres of snow are becoming a tourist attraction.

The New England Highway has reopened, and dozens of travellers are stopping on the side of the road to take pictures of the snow-capped mountains while children play in the snow.

Reports of snow are widespread, stretching to the northern tablelands and northwest slopes.

The heavy rain overnight has opened up dangerous potholes along the highway and there are fallen trees along the side of the road.

For people in

Central Tablelands, Hunter, Illawarra, Metropolitan and South Coast,

Issued at 5:05 am on Saturday 9 June 2007

Synoptic Situation: 3:00 am EST Saturday

A deep low east of Sydney is expected to move slowly to the east tonight.

Winds are expected to average over 65 km/h with peak wind gusts to exceed 90 km/h in the Hunter, Metropolitan and Illawarra, particularly near the coast.

Heavy rain is expected to cause flash flooding in the Hunter, Metropolitan and in the north and eastern parts of Central Tablelands. Heavy rain should ease in the Hunter district this morning, while it continues on the Central Tablelands and Metropolitan and extends into the Illawarra. Falls of over 200mm have been recorded since 9am yesterday in the Hunter with widespread flooding.

Damaging surf conditions, with waves exceeding 5 metres in the surf zone, are likely to produce significant beach erosion between Newcastle and Port Hacking, extending south to the Illawarra and northern parts of the South Coast this morning. Water levels above the highest astronomical tide of the year are possible.

Emergency services advise you to keep clear of fallen power lines, stay indoors away from windows and keep children indoors.

Emergency services advise you don't walk, ride your bicycle or drive through flood water, and keep clear of creeks and storm drains.

Emergency services advise you to check your property regularly for erosion or inundation by sea water, and if necessary, raise goods and electrical items.

Surf Life Saving Australia recommends that you stay out of the water and stay well away from surf-exposed areas.

The National Parks and Wildlife Service recommends that people consider postponing back country travel until conditions improve.

For emergency help in floods and storms, ring the SES [NSW and ACT] on telephone number 132 500.

The next warning is due to be issued by 11 am Saturday.

Another East Coast Low may form sometime during end of next week. This will be another serious threat and it will be alot more widespread than this event. Over 400mm of rain may be recorded. Dangerous surf and stronger gales is likely.

I am on the North Shore of Sydney, about 6 kms north of CBD. I have recorded 70mm of rain in the last 24 hours. I have a waterfall at the bottom of the garden which hasn't run in a few years (feeds in to Lane Cove River). Wind gust picking up - could be an interesting night.

Have a good one.
