I'm surprised there's not more people on here considering the storms were one of the main news items today. I found this good picture gallery on another forum:

Here

Does this mean that the drought in the south east of Australia id over now? I thought they were having their worst drought on record?

Sydney and central coast got it again for 2nd time!

Flash flooding reported around Sydney

Saturday June 16, 2007 - 10:48 EST

Wild weather is lashing Sydney and other coastal areas of New South Wales, damaging homes and causing localised flash flooding.

Wind gusts of up to 90 kilometres an hour have been recorded through the Central Coast area and in Sydney itself.

The wind has brought down down trees and power lines. More than 1,000 homes in Wollongong, on Sydney's northern beaches, and in the city's west have lost power.

Heavy rain has also caused flash flooding and a number of roads have been closed.

The Weather Bureau's Rob Webb says a severe weather warning issued overnight remains in force

Earlier David Webber from the State Emergency Services (SES) said it had received around 100 calls for help from people in Sydney during the morning.

"Most of those calls have been for trees down and water getting into properties," he said.

Adam Berry from the Road Transport Authority (RTA) says motorists need to be careful if they are driving on roads affected by flooding.

"People really shouldn't take the chance trying to get through a road that might be flood-affected or covered by water, [it is] potentially dangerous [and can cause] potential damage to their car."

Heavy rain has also been falling in the Illawarra, the Hunter and on the Central Coast.

The SES has sandbagged low lying areas at Shoalhaven Heads on the lower reaches of the Shoalhaven River.

Nowra has recorded 160 millimetres of rain over the past two days.

SES duty officer Paul Marr says crews will continue to monitor the Shoalhaven River closely.

"Downstream on the Shoalhaven in a couple of lying areas at Shoalhaven Heads there's water entry basically from urban flooding, suburban flooding, it's not a river problem at this stage," he said.

Nationwide cool down

Rebecca Lodin, Thursday June 21, 2007 - 17:53 EST

A cold spell has been cast across our vast brown land over the last few days, leaving almost all of Australia with below average maximum temperatures on Wednesday.

QLD has been the most affected, particularly in the west where daytime highs stayed at an amazing 17 below average. Barcaldine had its coldest day on record, getting to just 8 degrees.

In NSW, northern areas were up to 10 below average. Barraba in the Northwest Slopes and Plains had its coldest day since 1989, reaching 8 degrees.

In SA, it has remained cool, calm and collected during the night with a high pressure system overhead. On Thursday, lows dived to 10 below average in the Northwest Pastoral. Marla had its chilliest night on record at minus 4 degrees.

The cold air in the upper atmosphere causing the chill will move east over the next few days, so it will start to get a little warmer.

This may not last for long, as another upper trough bringing cold air is expected to cross the country early next week.

An odd sight in the NT sky, with abundant rain in a season dry

Rebecca Lodin, Thursday June 21, 2007 - 17:52 EST

Rain is easing in the NT, marking the end of an extraordinary event. Some of the highest June rainfalls and lowest average temperature maximums were recorded.

Although this event is ending, Weatherzone’s long range forecasts show that there may be greater than normal rainfall over the next couple of months.

An upper trough has brought extensive rainfall across the state. Places such as Oenpelli, Victoria River and Daly waters are now having their wettest June on record.

Most of the rain has cleared but there may be more on the way over the weekend, as another upper trough will cross the NT.

This trough will be weaker, so the rain should not be as heavy.

During the next two months, there may be more wet weather on the way, as long range forecasting models predict above to well above normal rainfall for almost all districts of the NT.

Top End shivers in unusual cold

Anne Barker, Thursday June 21, 2007 - 08:48 EST

Reuters image

Freezing: Some Top End residents feel the cold more than others. - Reuters

It may be hard to imagine, but Northern Territory residents are stocking up on jumpers and blankets as they shiver through the coldest June on record.

The wild weather further south has brought unprecedented cold and steady rain to much of the Top End in what is meant to be the sunny, dry season.

With temperatures under 23 degrees Celsius, locals used to wearing thongs and shorts all year round have been wearing fleece-lined jackets and polo neck jumpers.

Some Darwin residents do not even own a jumper or jacket but the weather is making tourists from Britain feel right at home.

"I love it, it reminds me of home, because it's always cold back home," one said.

Tennant Creek and Katherine have had their coldest June days on record, but Darwin baker Rob Hartwick is glowing, because hot pie sales have gone through the roof.

"We've been busy today because of the cold weather, flat out selling pies," he said.

"People are cold so they want hot coffees and hot food."

But while pies and jumpers are in big demand, Darwin's outdoor cinema, The Deckchair, has struggled to break even.

Manager Jett Street says only hardy cinema buffs are venturing out in the cold, with blankets and doonahs.

"Even last night they braved the rain, but a lot of people set up in the kiosk area and watched it from under the shade of the roof," she said.

"One of my friends pointed out that it was probably an ideal night to come to the cinema because it's like a winter night anywhere else in Australia and they just don't get to experience it."

People are not the only ones who are suffering, with the chilly conditions also playing havoc with the digestive system of salt water crocodiles.

Wildlife expert Graham Webb says this means they cannot even eat.

"It's tough for crocodiles when it gets cold, because they can't digest food," he said.

"We operate at 36 or 37 degrees and we need that for everything to work. Crocodiles have got to get out in the sun to warm up, so their digestion and everything works.

"So if it gets really cold for a long period, they've got a real problem."

Woman trapped by snow rescued

01 Jul 2007

An Australian woman is being treated in hospital after her house was snowed in, reports ABC News on June 29th.

The news provider states that the 24-year-old was trapped by the snow in her home south of Canberra on Thursday evening.

However, ambulance crews were unable to reach her straight away as they could not get through the waist-deep snow.

Skidoos were used to reach the house and the woman was taken to hospital suffering from asthma and hypothermia.
