After a completely dry month, I have had 28.6mm of rain since yesterday. My dad, however, has had 4.8mm of rain. He lives just 10 miles away, is 250ft higher up, on the western flank of the Pennines, and has Murton Pike (1900ft) towering above his house. Logic suggests (to me anyway) that he should have had more rain than me and not the other way round.

Am I being daft, or is this odd, and is there any logical explanation other than it was just wetter where I was?

Looking at the radar from yesterday and overnight, I reckon you were on the northern and eastern flank of the heaviest most persistant rain, so that 10 mile difference was enough. Not sure why that may have been though, as like you say it sounds like your dad should have been in a prime spot.

like you suggest OON being higher and on an xposed western hill side one would normally expect rainfall there to be higher than yourself.

I can only postulate that the band of rain remained mostly to the west of his site.

Have a look at the Net Wx rainfall from yesterday and overnight, do the blow up bit and see how it travelled(the rain band). It may show what I suggest.

Actually, I did that, and Paul's right; I was on the edge of the heaviest bit. I guess it's just one of those things, but I'm still surprised topography didn't play more of a role.

The good news is, this means I can fork my lawn properly. The bad news is I'm fuming this didn't make the news and clearly shows their southern bias.
