    Since it looks as though we're having the wettest May-June period for England and Wales since 1860, here's a look back at that year

    Jan: 3.5

    Feb: 1.7

    Mar: 4.7

    Apr: 5.9

    May: 11.5

    Jun: 12.3

    Jul: 14.5

    Aug: 13.6

    Sep: 11.2

    Oct: 9.8

    Nov: 4.5

    Annual CET: 7.89

    Joint 12th coldest year in the CET records

    4th coldest summer with 13.5

    Wettest May-June period on record with 250.1mm

    Wettest June on record with 157.1mm

    10th wettest August on record with 148.5mm

    4th wettest summer on record with 370.8mm

    Highest maximum recorded for 1860 at the Royal Greenwich Observatory was a mere 24.7C on the 23rd of May. Camden Square recorded a maximum of just 24.5C on that same date. They were the highest temperatures recorded that year for those stations.

    Shows the lack of warmth during 1860!

    When you look at statistics like this is certainly puts any grumbles we may have now of slightly below average temp CET's out the window. Remarkable how cold a year that was. If we had a year comparable to 1860 again some would probably start saying the new age is on the way. Still we can still get the hefty rain totals on a par with with what the past delivered.

    Kevin, almost as striking is the frequency of daily maxima above 80f in the preceding three years. Assuming that those temperatures were recorded from, say, mid May to mid September (about 120 days), that means approximately 22-29% of days recorded maxima of 80f or more!

    Did something globally happen to cause this, ie volcanic eurption?
