Afternoon,

A stormy day across much of the Alps with heavy rainfall, now turning to snow above 1500m as colder air slowly moves from west to east. The picture is at 2130m above Gargellen in the Austrian Voralberg region. Web pictures further down the mountain show rain is turning to heavy snowfall at about 1500 asl.

hi Red Raven,

I have never skied in the Dolomites, but I have been told that scenically the area is dramatic. Sometimes on a clear day I can see the tops of the Stella Group way out to the SW of Katschberg. In the late afternoon they appear orange with distinctive jagged tops. Very beautiful. Corvara is about the same height at 1568 m asl, the same as Katschberg village, so snowfall is pretty well assured. Enjoy your 7 th season. I can assure you it just gets better. I am totally fruit and nuts about the Alps!

Very nice. Looks like you had picked the right week Red Raven. Like the shot from the hotel with the snow drifts, they just blow me away.

Thanks

Morning all,

Snow level down to 1600 m last night in the Montafon Region. That mountain in the background is the mighty Madisa, separates Swizerland and Austria. The other side of that mountain is the famous resorts of Kloisters and Davos. Snow level in Katchberg is 1800 m this morning. A good day for a mountain hike with very clear visibility. Snow level generally expected to rise to 2000m this afternoon.

Ski 2006 I went to Arabba, quiet but lovely. The Dolomites are spectacular and the skiing in 06 was excellent with prolonged cold conditions. Resort -6c by day and -12 by night. Corvara, went to the boot bop bar a few times and that Red run that comes down from the opposite side to the main Gondola was/is superb. You get that steep chair lift up to the top and bank right to a very steep [but wide] drop. We went to Corvara after our Hidden Valley venture...worth it if you haven't done it yet. If anyone has seen 007 For Your Eyes Only when Roger Moore goes up the cable car to that viewing platform that leads you to the Hidden Valley....truly spectacular. So far on equal parr with Kitzbuhel as my fav location. :)

Morning West,

Because we are fairly high at 1600 M snow can fall at anytime of the year. Compared to last year , it is much earlier.

The cold circulation over these parts of the Alps is expected to continue over the weekend with the airmass of Arctic origin trapped by the large wedge of high pressure to the north. So yes, its looking good for an early base to form. I do know there is some excellent ski-ing at the moment on the Mol Gracier.

Cheers

Morning all,

Fieberbruum in the Tirol this morning at 790m. One of the snowiest resorts in the Alps-the area seems to produces its own micro climate, one of the few resorts these days below 1000m that almost guarantee the white stuff .

Lots of snowfall this morning above 500m in the Tirol, Salzburgerland and Montafon Valley, even in Innsbruck city.

More shots later.

Fantastic stuff Carinthian, and thanks for the response yesterday. I've skiied the Alps early before: Murren in November for instance, so have kept a beady eye on conditions. This does seem a very early start to me.

I have such a hunch we're in for a cold 'un!

Hello West,

As long as the dreaded Euro High does not sit over the Alps and France. Synoptics look good for an early start with an Easterly component to the airflow across much of Europe . Fingers crossed. I never been to Murren, but I know John Holmes loves the area.

Latest on the snowfall in Austria.

Seems to becoming widespread in the Salzburgerland and Tirol provinces with reports of intense snowfall above 450m. In these Northern jam situations 48 hours of persistant snowfall can occur. Snow in Carinthian region is lighter but fairly persistant. Not seen snowfall like this in Mid-October before.

I think Musicman who lives in the more Northern Region is going to send some pictures later.

Hi,

thought I would send this shot. There has been so much snowfall in the higher parts of Upper Austria and Salzburgerland over the past 60 hours, the depth is now half way up the ski- lift pylon. Fall off that chair lift, you will never been seen again !

Hi Carinthian, with that much snow this early, do you think it will thaw totally or stick around now for the winter?.

Hi Carinthian, with that much snow this early, do you think it will thaw totally or stick around now for the winter?.

hI Steve,

If it was 1st December with short days and little sunshine on the Northern Slopes ,I would be confident for it to stick around for much of the winter above 1500m. The present snow level is 700m and is expected to rise to 1200m during the next 7 days. However, the mountain forecast centre in Salzburg indicates that a base has now been made above that level with a continued good chance of renewed snowfall in the present weather pattern. A flow from the Adriatic would quickly thaw the snow lying below 1200m, if that were to happen ?

C

Another one for you snow lovers. Thats Fieberbrunn mountain around the corner from Kitzbuhel in the Ost Tirol. A real snow pocket this , 4Ocm of the white stuff fallen at only 790m asl

Thank you for the updates and wonderful photos Carinthian. I am impressed by the amount of snow that there is already. I hope the weather remains cold.
