There's a discussion on my town's forum titled 'When will this weather improve?'

The thread was started last week and the weather has improved significantly since then, thankfully.

The reason for my post is that, yes, this is surely (definitely) one of the wettest summers ever, but a few people in my town are adamant that it is a cool summer too.

I have posted that it isn't a cool summer. Sure it hasn't been hot, but we've had regular maximums of 19c-22c with minimums rarely dropping below 11c.

So can anyone say where we are (at present) in relation to some surely cooler summers of the past? I'm quite positive from childhood memory that some of the 80s summers were cooler.

Mr Data, this is one for you I think  . Thank you.

I remember some summers were cooler in the 70s and 80s, but I was mainly up North then, so that defeats the object really.

But if taking a guess, I would say that apart from the flooded areas the rest of the country was about right for your average poor summer(in an all time list), nothing too special yet. If on the other hand things remain wet/unsettled mostly or even get worse then its going to rate pretty high in a worst summer list.

Off the top of my head obviously, not researched

Regards,

Russ

Based on my own records the current summer would be very unlikely to be cooler than any of the following unless something extraordinary happens during the next 6 weeks.

1962, 1965, 1966, 1978, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1993, and 1998.

June was warmer than average, although the second half was only around average, and July ( so far ) isn't in the same league as the Julys of 1965, 1980 or 1988.

Interesting to see Summer 1990 and 1995 in that list below 2007 up to the 10th. It just shows how things can change.

Yes, I couldn't believe it at first when I saw 1995's figure below 2007's! On reflection I'm not so surprised, as by July 10th 1995 (the day of a fantastic lightning storm here) we'd only had about 3 weeks of summer weather plus the first 6 days of May which were hot; it was that first half of June 1995 that was no doubt responsible. That first half of June must have been even worse than I remember it as in fact for despite regular 25C+ maxima in the last week (30C the last 2 days) it only just beat the awful June 1997 by the CET figure.

I'm not surprised to see that by this stage 1992 was the hottest summer of the 90s; it was the inverse of the classic 90s "dodgy May/June and decent July/August" pattern.

I must say I find that 1989 figure very odd (even lower than 1990 and 1995 up to the 10th). As I recall the middle of June 1989 was very warm even by today's standards.

A week later in July 1989 we were basking in 34C in Surrey, the highest UK temp since 1976 and, until last year, the warmest July day of recent times. August 1989 contained some very high night time minima. Things can indeed change so quickly.
