Could someone please tell me exactly where you should locate a thermometer? I take it that it should be in the shade, sheltered from the wind and some distance from the nearest building??

Preferably hanging on something so not to afford heat from a wall, so probably a tree, or you could set up a pole and hang it off. I would say not below 2m above ground level. 2m seems an advantegeous height. It strictly should be in the shade and away from any suntraps, A north facing courtyard or side of the garden is probably the best bet.

Be wary that even in the shade the sun may have influence, try to pick part of your garden or house surroundings that dont see the sun all day, or rarely see the sun.

Direct wind doesn't affect temperatures readings, so you dont have to worry about the wind

27.1 bit lower than June, but rounded up joint highest temperature for this summer for this location. I think the 27C will be the highest over the entire summer

Got upto 29C today whichis pretty easily the warmest day of the year behind yesterday. I wouldn't rule out a higher temp given we stil lhave much of August to go but I think it may be a touch tougher as we go along the month.

Haven't looked in the Stevenson screen but suspect between 27C and 28C. The warmest day this year by a long way.

29c today.

In a strange way I was hoping that the 26c from early June wouldn't be exceeded as it would have been very notable, however 27c yesterday saw that off and today was always going to be hotter.

Today has been the warmest day of the year so far but only just! Top temp today 16.1C.

Viking,

I recall today's maximum for Lerwick was not only the highest teamperature this year,

but for the last two years. Think last year's temp never rose above 15 to 16C.

29c today.

I'm not surprised Westbury's temp rose to 29C Andy - phew, it wasn't half hot in Cheddar mid-afternoon!

I think as skies were very much clearer today than forecast, many places in the

West Country away from Devon and Cornwall and the immediate coasts,

saw temperatures into the high 20's C.

TS, I expect it was pleasant in the shade by the cliffs? Cheddar is lovely (that's the place is lovely, not the cheese :) ).

Re. the 29c here, we always achieve our highest temps with a SSE/SE flow under clear, sunny skies as I think there is a foehn effect that happens on the leeside of Salisbury Plain ; it would explain the fairly brisk, hot breeze through the afternoon.

Was most suprised today how warm and sunny it was hottest day of the year so far with a high of 25.1c, beating the last high of 24.5c which was way back in june, we've not got any higher than 23.6c since the 9th of june, till today

TerminalMoraine-tastic!

I'm amazed that TM hasn't moved to Shetland himself (to the bit on top of the hill obviously, just for the extra windchill)
