    July 2007 Report.

    By Paul Carfoot.

    With low pressure maintaining control of the weather over the UK. The first 4 days in to the month were very unsettled here in Stanton, with heavy downpours and thunderstorms and the temperatures mostly on the cool side. After a brief rest bite from the 7th to the 12th with less rain and a little more sunshine and more reasonable temperatures, more heavy and persistent rain returned on the 13th depositing 10mm here.

    More rainy days followed, although a short interlude of fine warm weather occurred on the 18th and 19th, but this was soon replaced by more very wet weather on the 20th with 25mm more rain over that 24-hour period.

    The considerably wet weather continued for a further 8 days with another 25mm of rain at the end of a 24 hour period on the 26th.

    On the 29th pressure began to rise slowly and the weather began to dry out and settle down at last, but ironically it became cooler with night time minimums getting quite low for July, I recorded a minimum air temperature of 7.7c on the 30th and 6.5c on the 31st, minimum grass temperatures got as low as 1.5c and 1c respectively, but with clear skies and good sunny periods during the daytime it felt very pleasant.

    Summary.

    An extremely wet month, I have only kept records since 2005, but certainly the wettest by a very large margin. July 2005 = 54mm , July 2006 = 31mm, July 2007 = 124mm.

    It was also a below average month, the first here since March 2006.

    Stats for July 2007

    Average maximum temperature = 19.4c

    Average minimum temperature = 11.5c

    Mean temperature = 15.4 -1.1c below the CET average.

    Warmest day on the 19th = 24.2c

    Coldest day on the 21st = 13.7c

    Warmest night on the 14th = 14.7c

    Coldest night on the 31st = 6.5c

    Ground Frosts = 0

    Air frost = 0

    Days of Rain, with 1mm or more = 17

    Wettest Day 20th and 26th = 25mm

    Days of snow = 0

    Days of lying snow = 0

    Thunder heard / Thunderstorms = 3

    Rainfall total = 124 mm

    Rain total this year = 486mm

    Some people get bored by stats, but I love them. This is a cracker and one of those vagaries that makes weather watching so good....

    ... the joint highest temperature for July was 24c yesterday afternoon (the 31st) and followed on from a starting temperature of 6c, the lowest minimum of the month on the same morning ;) .

    This was by far the coolest July of the five I've recorded temperatures and it was an amazing 4.32c cooler mean-wise than 2006! It's also the first time for me that a July mean has been lower than a June mean.

    Average max = 20.32c (highest = 24c on 14th & 31st)

    Average min = 11.19c (lowest = 6c on 31st)

    Mean = 15.75c

    Dry days = 10

    Rain days = 21

    Rainfall = 134mm

    A distinctive rarity over the last couple of years - a negative temperature anomaly. This accompanied by high rainfall (207%) and below average sunshine makes it the worst July since 1988 here. In spite of this, EvapoTranspiration still exceeded rainfall and my part of Kent totally missed out on any flooding, being on the edge of downpours rather than right underneath them. Subjectively however, somehow it didn't really seem that bad...

    A cool, wet and unsettled month. Rainfall was over three times the expected amount. It differed to June in that the majority fell in shower form, rather than from frontal rain. The first half of the month was almost a degree warmer than the second, with maxima regularly in the range of 15-19°C. The last 4 days were pleasant however, with broken cloud, low humidity and temperatures at 18-21°C in pleasant sunshine. The high maxima of the month of 22.9°C was the lowest July value since 1988, though the mean was only the lowest since 2004.

    In summary, a rare below average month, the first since March 2006. Though unremittingly wet.
