I think it happens most years, it can snow any day of the year in the Alps and sometimes to surprisingly low levels with wet snow falling and cooling the air in enclosed valleys.

Stelvio has a good cover too.

I was at Rauris, quite near Zell am See last August and the snow cover got down to about 1100 m asl. First time in my life I have ever seen lying snow in August.

My brother-in-law and his new wife are currently there on honeymoon and I see that it is currently 8C at Zell and 6C a little higher up. Thus not surprised at all to see lying snow around Grossglockner.

Snow at Kirchdorf/ kitzbuhel at 750m asl , its typical for them to not have snow until late November most years so this is unusual there . http://www.snoweye.com/?page=at-tyrol-east

Many alpine peaks are snow free for the very first time, at least up until a few days ago.

Unprecedented snow melt and heat in the European Alps

The recent heat wave in Europe has especially been anomalous at higher altitudes resulting in some of the highest Alpine peaks in Europe being snow-free for the first time on record including the iconic peak Matterhorn.

It's very mis-leading of Wunderground to claim Aiguille du Midi is 'snow free'.

The station there is on a rocky pinnacle as shown in the picture and does not hold much snow, all but when you look down the sides there are extensive snow fields of considerable depth which certainly won't have melted.

The webcam at Silvretta Dam used to get stuck up with snow most of the winter but is better placed now.

The foreground is a large car park through summer.

It's hard to say but it looks like some kind of ski or snowmobile track on the frozen dam.

The mountains look exceptionally heavy with snow.
